All boys and girls belonging to the Junior Department of the Bap tist Sunday School are urged to be present Sunday morning, Dec. 20th, for the Christmas program. They will remember to bring the gifts for the boys and girls of Connie Maxwell Orphanage. Mrs. W. C. Reedy of Abbeville was the guest of her sister, Mrs. Wistar Harmon, the past week end. Friends of Mrs. M. C. White are glad to learn that she is rapidly recuperating from a minor opera tion which she underwent Tues day of last week at the University Hospital, Augusta. She returned Home Friday. Mr. J. W. Corley spent the week end in Greenville with his daughter, Miss Mary C. Corley. Mr. J. L. Bracknell of Plum Branch was a visitor here yester day. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Jordan of An derson spent Saturday and Sunday here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hamlin. Miss Nan Workman, student of Anderson College, Anderson, spent Saturday and Sunday here with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. C. H. Workman. Mrs. Georgia Talbert has return ed from a visit to her daughters. Mrs. R. E. Barron, of Rock Hill, and Mrs. A. F. Burnside, of Columbia. Dr. and Mrs. W. G. Blackwell have returned from a visit to their son, Mr. William Blackwell, of Macon, Ga. Glad to report the rapid recovery of Mr. Thomas McKinney, who has been confined to his bed for three and a half weeks with heart trouble and rheumatism. His many friends are hoping that he will soon be able to be out again. The W. M. S. of the Baptist church will- meet Sunday afternoon at 3:30 at the church. -xx- Buy Christmas Seals! Each year from Thanksgiving to Christmas, Americans from Maine to Hawaii and from Alaska to Flor ida unite with the people of 41 other countries in one of the most powerful mass movements against a common foe that the world has ever known—TUBERCULOSIS. Un der the leadership of J. Fred Buz- hardt, McCormick County is again going forward in this great cam paign. Voluntarily we participate in the annual sale of Christmas Seals, those gay holiday stickers on which appears that international symbol of health and hope—the double- barred cross. This year the United States Seals also bear the picture cf jovial good health personified, Santa Claus. Christmas Seals, since 1907 when the first one was sold in Wilming ton, Delaware, have raised funds— penny by penny and dollar by dol lar—that have helped to build a line of defense that protects all of us. That the. defenses are effective is shown clearly by the fact that the tuberculosis death rate has been down from 179 deaths per 100,000 population in 1907 to 54 in 1935. There is still an average of 5 deaths per year from T. B. in Mc Cormick county and an estimate of 45 active cases. Against the unnecessary toll taker by this communicable, pre ventable and curable disease, the comparatively small sums of money raised in local communities by vol untary groups have been used in those communities with a definite plan, under the guidance of the National Tuberculosis Association. These funds have promoted the ; establishment of agencies of va- 1 rious kinds that have in turn been chiefly instrumental in gradually ( bringing tuberculosis under control. These lines of defense may be cat alogued briefly thus: 1. 1,200 institutions, — sanatoria for tuberculosis and hospitals hav ing tuberculosis departments, — providing 95,000 beds for the treat ment and prevention of tubercu losis, chiefly for adults. 2. 10,000 public health nurses en- A TASTE THRILL ...PURE... More than 1,200 preventoria, summer camps, open-air schools and similar institutions for the care and treatment of children with va rious forms of tuberculosis or for those who have been in contact with tuberculosis, or who are sub normal physically. 5. 1,981 tuberculosis associations including a state-wide organization in every state and local agencies in all of the larger population cen ters. But the building of our national defense against tuberculosis is not completed. The disease still takes the lives of about 70,000 persons annually in the United States. Tuberculosis, although ranking seventh as a cause of death when all ages are considered, is the lead ing killer of people between 15 and 45. It remains the breaker of homes, the maker of orphans and a con stant threat to the life and hap piness of everyone. Do your part in trying to wipe out this dread disease. Civil Service Exam inations Announced The United States Civil Service Commission has announced open i competitive examinations as fol- ?ows: Associate entomologist, $3,200 a year, assistant entomologist, $2,600 a year, Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine, Department of Agriculture. Assistant librarian, $2,600 a year. Department of Labor. All States except Colorado, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minne sota, Nebraska, Vermont, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, have received less than their quota of appointments in the apportioned departmental service at Washing ton, D. C.
