SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One Year $1.00 Mat Months .75 Three Months .50 ——— I. ■UII.J \ Weekly Cotton Grade And Staple Reports For Southeastern States For Week Ending Nov. 19,1936 Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 21.—The week ly grade and staple reports for the Southeastern States issued today by the Atlanta office of the Bureau cf Agricultural Economics show that samples classed this week from current ginnings from Geor gia, South Carolina, and Virginia, are higher in grade than fop any recent week. The proportions for the higher grades. Strict Middling and above, have steadily increased in these three States for several weeks. Samples from North Caro lina classed this week are slightly lower in grade than were the sam ples classed last week, while Ala bama samples are considerably low er in grade this week than for last week. For the season to date, the pro portions representing the higher grades, Strict Middling and above, for States for which reports are is sued by the Atlanta office are as follows: South Carolina 29 per cent. Georgia 26 per cent, Alabama 24 per cent, North Carolina 22 per cent, and Virginia 11 per cent. Generally the samples classed from recent ginnings have been shorter in staple length than sam ples classed from mid-season gin nings, though the decrease in length has been slight. Lengths 1 inch and longer comprise 72 per cent of samples from South Caro lina classed to date, 62 per cent from North Carolina, 33 per cent from Georgia, 17 per cent from Virginia, and 12 per cent from Ala bama. xx Ginning Figures Total More Washington, Nov. 21.—Cotton of this year’s growth ginned prior to November 14 was reported by the census bureau today to have total ed 10,766.378 running bales, count ing 225,615 round bales as half bal es, and including 7,384 bales oi American -Egyptian. Ginnings last year to November 14 totaled 8,436,538 running bales. Including 167,251 round bales and 9,490 bales of American-Egyptian and to that date two years ago; 8,634,632 running bales including 159,667 round bales and 9,021 of American-Egyptian. The crop of this year, as forecast by the department of agriculture this month, is indicated to be 12,- 400,000 bales of 500 pounds gross weight each. Last year’s production was 10,638,000 bales. Full infcrmaticn may be obtain ed. from th* Secretary of the United States Civil Service Board of Ex- RED CROSS HIGHWAY POSTS AID INJURED 1,000 Function At Key Points To Give Emergency Care To Traffic Hurt Highway first aid stations, set up by the Red Cross .to give emergency care to victims of traffic accidents, are sav ing lives, according to James L. Fieser, vice chairman in charge of domestic operations. “More than 1,000 of our emergency posts are already operating in 47 states and thousands of others will soon be established at key points along Amer ica’s highways,” Mr. Fieser stated. The Red Cross highway posts are concentrated at danger spots in rural areas where medical aid is not readily available. The importance of this cov erage of. the open road, the Red Cross holds, is given sharper emphasis by the fact that there has been a 150 per cent increase in rural traffic fatalities during the past twelve years. The project was initiated last year on a national scale as a practical ap proach to the highway accident prob lem. The Red Cross felt that it could best apply Its strength by succoring those who continue to be injured pend ing a reduction in the highway accident rate through legislation and safety edu cation. > “Our program brings first aid skill to the scene of accident in an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and maimed in automobile mishaps,” Mr. Fieser said. "Our highway first aid ers are not medical meh in any sense, but it is their job to turn the injured over to the medical profession in the best shape possible.” The Red Cross highway posts are es tablished at gasoline service stations, tourist homes, rural police and fire de partments. The personnel of the posts are trained by the Red Cross in first aid, standard first aid equipment is in stalled at each station, and identifying signs for the benefit of motorists aro erected beside the highway at both ap proaches to the station. The attendants of these roadside units who qualify as first aiders volun teer their services through the Red Cross and may under no circumstances accept pay for caring for the injured. To complement the highway first aid stations, the Red Cross has announced formation of mobile units. Several thou sand trucks which regularly ply the highway in the course of routine work will be equipped with first aid kits. Drivers and crews will take courses in both standard and advanced first aid, and each truck will be identified as a Red Cross mobile unit. More than a hundred trucks are already operating. “The highway police of eight states who have finished first aid training will join this army mobilized to cut acci dent fatalities and prevent complica tion of minor injuries through mishan dling at the scene of accident,” Mr. Fieser said. “We receive reports from our first aid stations daily, telling of essential care given to traffic casualties on the spot and of lives actually saved.” This and many other Red Cross pro grams of equal value are supported by ■the people of America during the an nual Roll Call for members. During the past year the Red Cross qualified 222,693 persons in first aid and taught water safety and rescue methods to 80,961. This army of First Aiders and Life Savers is one of the great safe ty factors in the nation. They are trained to give immediate first aid at the scene of accident, thus saving many lives and preventing perma nent injury. Red Cross training in cludes skill in treating for shock, splinting fractures, checking arte rial bleeding, applying artificial res piration, towing drowning persons to safety, and in the safe handling of boat and canoe. Red Cross volunteers, framework of le organization, last year gave a total : 1,707,220 hours of service, producing !5,074 garments, 4,355,719 surgical •essings, 16,773 Christmas bags for jldiers, sailors and marines serving rerseas.
