Lesson for November 8th. Ephesians 6:13-20. Golden Text: Ephesians 6:10. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is one of the noblest of the New Testament books, Note that there is no note of controversy in it.‘As Prof. Scott points out, this letter, more than any other of the writ ings of the apostle, takes the form of a religious meditation. Here Paul apparently wants to forget the dissensions and troubles of liis churches, and to devote him self entirely to the timeless teach ings of religion. , His principal theme is the Chris tian church. The world, he says, is an arena of perpetual discord, but in Christ all things are bound together. He is the common cen ter in whom broken < strands are tied into a solid knot. Thus God rules in the light of an ultimate plan. In Christ He will^restore the world to its original harmony. This sublime doctrine Paul outlines in the first three chapters. / In the last three chapters this conception is presented as the key to the importance of the church. All things are to be reconciled by Ood through Christ, but this re- concila'tion is to be fulfilled through the mediation of the Christian church which exists to make real the gospel of good-will between all; men, Jews and Gentiles alike. Such brotherly love, through the work of the church, will extend in ever- widening circles until it embraces the entire universe. It is in the light of this grand philosophy that we are to under stand our lesson text taken from the eloquent final chapter. Here is described the Christian’s armour. Like a captain instructing his men on the eve of a crucial battle, Paul gives to his fellow-soldiers a de scription of the foes they must lace, the forces they must over come, and the full equipment they must wear in order to acquit them selves victoriously. His exhortation is well summarized in the stirring words of the* Golden Text, “Be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might.” WANT ADV.
