Suber, advising poultry raisers that
lights will not increase the yearly
egg production of hens but will
cause them to lay a greater num
ber of eggs during the fall and win
ter months when the price is high
est.
Bright lights are not necessary,
a 15-watt unshaded bulb to each
20-foot section of the house giv
ing ample light. Kerosene lanterns
also •’re used successfully for light
ing hens.
Morning or all-pight lights may
be used, but experiments have
shown that as a rule all-night
lights are more profitable than
lights turned on about 4 a. m. It
is also a much more convenient
practice, especially if one is using
kerosene lanterns to light the
house, for the lanterns can be
lighted about eight or nine o’clock
or just before the flock owner goes
to bed.
Contrary to popular belief, lights
do not lower hatchability of eggs
or strength of chicks. Trials at the
South Carolina Experiment Station
and elsewhere have shown repeat
edly that neither morning nor
all-night lights have these effects.
