Treasurer’s Notice The County Treasurer’s Office will be open for the purpose of re ceiving taxes from the 15th day of September, 1936, to the 15th day of March, 1937. All taxes shall be due and pay able between the 15th day of Sep- fpm»>er, 1936, and December 31, 1936. Durken, petty officer in charge of the U. S. Navy Recruit ing Station at the U. S. Court House Building, Columbia, S. Sept. 5.—D. W. Watkins, director of the Extension Service, announces the appointment of two new extension workers and the pro motion of others. The new men are W. J. Martin to be assistant county farm agent in Spartanburg and D. A. Shelley tc be assistant county farm agent n Aiken. These transfers and appoint ments are made to facilitate the important work under the Soil Service. x Diseased Cattle Removed By AAA From Dairy Herds The elimination of diseased dairy cattle, primarily those infected with tuberculosis and Bang’s dis ease, has been markedly expand ed during the past two years un der Government programs, E. W. Gaumnitz, chief of the Dairy Sec tion, Agricultural Adjustment Ad ministration, has announced. During the period July 1, 1934, to July 1, 1936, over four million herds, comprising 47,382,164 cattle, were tested for tuberculosis, and more than one-half million cattle reacted and were removed. For Bang’s disease, 683,270 herds, com>- prising nearly 10 million cattle, were tested during this two-year period, and 838,114, or 8.4 per cent of the total number, reacted and were removed. There were 9.801 herds tested for mastitis and 28,439 cattle affected with this disease- were eliminated, Mr. Gaumnitz said. Indemnity payments under these programs amounted to $9,388,396 on the tuberculosis cattle, $20,876,943 on Bang’s disease reactors, an '. $849,806 on mastitis cattle, a total of slightly more than 31 million dollars. These payments were made possible by appropriations of funds under the Jones-Connaliy Act of 1934, and other measures. In South Carolina much progress has been made, says C. G. Cush^ man, extension dairy specialist, in eliminating Bang’s disease under the government plan. Most of the counties are now considered free of tuberculosis in dairy cattle and'are' known as modified accredited areas. This entitles breeders to ship cattle interstate, with’ permit from the Clemson Livestock Sani tary Office in Columbia, without testing the cattle. Continued work on Bang’s disease will eventually rid the state of this, disease also, Cushman states, STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, ‘ County of McCormick.
