Advises Sanitation
Against Coccidiosis
Clemson, April 25.—Warm weath
er and rainy days usually bring
coccidiosis, especially if the chick
ens are brooded on ground that
was used for brooding last year,
says P. H. Gooding, extension
poultryman, advising thorough san
itation as a safeguard against the
disease.
Coccidiosis is caused by tiny
parasites that cannot be seen by
the raked eye, Mr. Gooding ex
plains. These parasites, or coccid-
ia, may live in the ground from
season to season and for this rea
son chicks should not be allowed
.0 range on the same ground two
years in succession. Neither should
chicks be allowed to range with
the laying flock, as most hens are
Carriers of ccccidia.
The symptoms of coccidiosis are
usually drooping wings, sleepy ap
pearance, and the chicks are pale
and anaemic looking. Bloody drop
pings frequently occur and the
hicks rapidly lose weight.
The least indication of the pres
ence of this disease calls for a
thorough cleaning of the house im
mediately and for practicing strict
sanitation. All the dirt and the re
fuse from the floor should be re
moved. The floor and walls should
be thoroughly disinfected with lye
or one of the coal tar prepara
tions. Then when the house is dry,
clean litter should be supplied and
the hoppers and fountains cleaned,
scrubbed, and disinfected before re
placing the chicks. Litter should
be removed every other day for
at least two weeks.
Trials conducted at several ex
periment stations show that clean
ing is about the only thing that
aids in checking this disease. It
was thought for a long time that
feeding a large quantity of milk
would aid in checking coccidiosis.
Some investigators are now advis^
Ing not to feed milk in large quan
tities because milk has little or no
value in checking the disease, and
a high milk ration will cause a
i diarrhea which creates an ideal
condition for coccidia to develop.
