McCormick Has
New City Heads
Tuesday evening, April • 7th,
marked the beginning of a new
municinal regime in McCormick,
when T. J. Sibert was sworn in as
mayor and the following council-
men were installed: Dr. C. R.
Strom, C. H. Huguley, John T.
Faulkner, Dan A. Bell, J. O. Wil
liams and John T. McGrath.
Dr. C. K. Epting, the retiring
mayor, who has served the town
for the past eight years, did not
offer for reelection in the last
primary.
The only new member of the
council is J. O. Williams, who was
elected to take the place vacated
by Luke N. Brown who last fall
moved his residence outside the
city limits.
Dr. C. R. Strom was chosen
mayor pro tern., J. O. Patterson
reelected city clerk, and W. L.
Brown reelected chief of police.
Board of health elections were
as follows: G. J. Sanders, J. S.
Dukes, Rupert H. Talbert and Dr.
Manly Brown.
A committee, composed of Mayor
Sibert, C. H. Huguley and John T.
Faulkner, was appointed to work
with a group of ladies who are try
ing £o improve the city park and
playground.

Gold Star Mother
Claimed By Death
In Long Cane Home
Mrs. S. T. Young died at her
home in the Long Cane section of
McCormick county at 3 o'clock last
Friday morning after a short ill
ness.
Funeral services were conducted
from the Lower Long Cane Asso
ciate Reformed Presbyterian church
at 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon,
with her pastor, the Rev. W. C.
Kerr, of Abbeville, in charge. He
was assisted by the Rev. J. H. Buz-
hardt of Troy, and the Rev. W. L.
Pressly Of Due West. Interment was
in the family plot of the church
yard cemetery.
The following grandsons served
as pallbearers: Samuel David Wiley,
Paul Robertson Wiley, Oliver Ran
dolph Walker, Thomas Henry
Young, James Henry Walker, and
Thomas Jennings Franklin, Jr.
Flower girls were ten grand
daughters as follows: Frances Mar
shall Walker, Helen Elizabeth
Wiley, Mildred Young, Alberta
Jackqualine Walker, Estelle Wiley,
Jennie Young, Lillian Bell Walker,
Vivian Lee Young, Mary Jane Wiley
and Maggie Elizabeth Franklin.
Mrs. Young, the daughter of the
lafce Thomas and Sallie Jarfe Cress-
well, life long substantial citizens
of this county, was since early
girlhood a faithful and devoted
member of the Lower Long Cane
church and a woman of character
strength. She was one of the three
remaining Gold Star mothers of
McCormick county; her son John
Henry Young gave his life in ser
vice over seas during the World
War.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Young
is survived by the following chil
dren: Miss Willie Young, and Mrs.
A. R. Walker, Troy; Mrs. W. D.
Wiley, Mrs. J. T. WUey, Mrs. T. J.
Franklin, all of McCormick; Misses
Ruth Young and Maggie Young of
Troy; Jack Young, J. C. Young,
T. O. Young, of Troy, and Frank
Young, of Greenwood.

Minstrel To Be Given
At The Plum
Branch School
The Tenth Grade of the Plum
Branch School will put on the
Dixie Blackface Minstrel on Fri
day Night, April 17, at 8 o’clock.
Everyone enjoys seeing and hear
ing presentations of blackface
comedians and this one should
prove to be thoroughly enjoyable.
This performance is being put on
to raise money for the Junior-
Senior Banquet.
The public is cordially invited to
attend. The admission price is 10
cents for all school children and
20 cents for adults.

tys, superintendent of the De la
Howe state school hear here, prin
cipal speakers for the commence
ment exercises this year will be
Bishop K. G. Finley and Governor
Olin D. Johnston. Dates set for
commencement exercises are May
31 and June 1.
The graduating class is compos
ed of 10 members. Superintendent
Gettys has already made definite
arrangements for the placement
of six of these young people af
ter graduation and by June he ex
pects to have the entire group
placed either on jobs or in institu
tions of higher training.

Chevrolet March And
First Quarter Sales
Detroit, April 6.—Chevrolet sales
in March, 126,119 units, were the
highest for any month in the his
tory of the company, it was an
nounced here today. A new record
was set also for first-quarter sales,
which totaled 272,149, a gain of
97,839 over the same period last
year. The previous high record for
a single month had stood ever
since May, 1928, totaling 122,437.
The largest previous first quarter
record was 248,875 units in 1929.
Sales of used cars by Chevrolet
dealers were 165,170 in March,
and 481,834 (a new record) in the
first quarter. *
Mrs. Traynham Hurt
When Car Turns Over
Mrs. Bessie Marsh Traynham of
Honea Path was seriously injured
Tuesday about noon when the
Chevrolet sedan which she wa‘
driving turned over several timer
or a curve one mile from McCor
mick.
Mrs. Traynham was coming to
McCormick to join her daughter
Mrs. Fannie Kate McCain, and a
group of friends who planned to
leave that afternoon for the Azalea
Festival in Charleston, S. C.
The cause of the accident was
unknown, though members of her
family thought that she probably
was seized with a fainting spell
and lost control of the machine.
She was brought to the home of
Mrs. McCain here where medical
attention was given. Later she was
carried to the University Hospital
in Augusta, Ga., where it is report
ed that she is resting comfortably.

Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Alverson and
daughter, Elizabeth, of Lancaster
spent Easter here with Mr.
and Mrs. J. C. Link and family.
Mrs. Alverson is a sister of Mrs.
Link’s.
The Church School Day program
was put on at the Methodist
Church Sunday evening. Each
teacher arranged a feature for their
class and each did their part well.
Mrs. J. C. Link’s “Playlette” for
the primaries was original and was
very attractive and entertaining.
Miss South’s and Miss Lindley’s
juniors and intermediate classes
combined and sang a song, also
put on a “playlette” entitled “Morn
ing, Noon and Night.”
The young ladies of Mrs. Mitch
ell’s Senior class pantomined
“Jesus Keep Me Near The Cross,”
which was very impressive and
pretty.
Rev. Martin favored us with a
splendid talk.
Others that gave instructive
readings were Mr. C. F. Cade,
superintendent, Mrs. G. W. Cade,
Mrs. William Lindley, Mrs. J. C.
Link, Miss Helen Lindley, Miss
Lettie May South and Miss Frances
Lindley.
The “processional,” all dressed in
white, was really beautiful and well
to be proud of as representatives
of Bordeaux.
Miss Lucile Hughes, of Abbeville.
Mrs. L. A. Hoffman and Mrs. M. S.
Willis entertained the congrega
tion with appropriate songs for Eas
ter that all enjoyed. The church
was prettily decorated in white and
green for this occasion.

Resigns Position
A matter of sincere regret to the
friends and patrons of De la Howe
state school near McCormick, was
the recent resignation of Mrs. L.
Y. Phillips who had served the
institution as secretary for the past
10 years. She joined her husband
in Fayetteville, N. C., where he is
engaged in highway construction
work.
Mrs. Phillips was formerly Miss
Alberta James of Eastover, S. C.
During her stay at De la Howe,
she endeared herself to innumer
able friends in this section whf>
with the officials of the institu
tion, feel a distinct loss in her
going.
Miss Waddell Brabham, of Al
lendale S. C., has taken the place
of Mrs. Phillips. Miss Brabham
has made De la Howe her home
for several years, having graduat
ed there last June. She recently
graduated from Draughtons busi
ness college in Columbia.
