Farmers Can Protect
Soil With Lespedeza
Lespedeza ir rotation or as a
complete cover has been proven
a very valuable crop for controll
ing erosion, according to recent
trials conducted by the South Caro
lina Experiment Station and the
Soil Conservation Service.
Land planted to cotton in these
experiments lost, as a result of 3.85
inches of rain, 31,400 pounds of
soil per acre. Land covered with
lespedeza lost only 300 pounds,
reports Ernest Carnes, state co
ordinator of the Soil Conservation
Service.
Comparison of the amount of
rainfall lost by run-off also shows
a wide variation. Cotton land los-
65,400 gallons per acre while only
15,800 gallons ran off an acre of
land in lespedeza. A plot in corn
lost 50,400 gallons of rainfall and
17,400 pounds of soil per acre. All
experiments were made on Cecil
clay loam and Cecil sandy loam.
“While it would not be practical
for farmers depending on cotton
and corn for an income to plant
only lespedeza”, says Mr. Carnes,
“these experiments conclusively
show a definite need of legumes
in crop rotations.
“Studies made in crop rotations
indicate that cotton following les
pedeza yielded 939 pounds of seed
cotton per acre, against 538 pounds
where cotton followed cotton; an
increase of 61 per cent. In every
instance larger bolls were secured
from cotton following lespedeza.”
Many farmers on the project
areas of the Soil Conservation
Service are now growing lespedeza
and harvesting their own seed.
