“Dismiss your fears, little flock:
your Father finds a pleasure in giv
ing you the Kingdom.” Here Jesus
attacks worry, one of the major
afflictions of mankind. “There is
no greater plague of our genera
tion,” writes Bishop Gore, “than the
nervous anxiety which character
izes all its efforts.” And William
Lyon Phelps tells us that “the fear
of life is the favorite disease of the
20th century.”.
The keynote of the gospel is the
Master’s command, “Fear not.” or
“Be not anxious.” Goodspeed in his
admirable translation, uses the
phrase, “Do not worry.”
But how can we overcome our
despondent sinkings of heart in
such a feverish world as that in
which we live? One solution of this
practical problem is to live one day
at a time. “Do not worry about to
morrow”, counseled the Master,
“for tomorrow will have worries of
Its own. Let each day be content
with its own ills.” An old rabbi said
that “there is enough of trouble
in the very moment.” How much
wear and tear would be avoided
if we took all these words to heart!
When we learn to live by the day,
not anticipating future woe, we
thereby relieve ourselves of an im
mense amount of needless appre
hension. A good motto is “Semper
agens, semper quietus.”—“always
at work,” but “always calm.”
However, “the sovereign cure for
worry is religious faith,” as a great
philosopher assures us. This is why
Jesus was so serene. He was God-
intoxicated. A similar trust is pos
sible for Iris disciples. Consider
Brother Lawrence, an overgrown,
awkward fellow assigned to kitchen
duty in a monastery. In that
charming little devotional book,
“T^he Practice of the Presence of
Gcd,” we read his testimony on the
joy he found in his Maker. “What
ever becomes of me,” he said to
himself, “whether I be lost or saved,
I will always continue to act purely
for the love of God.” Here we find
a sure remedy for disquietude.

Greenville, March 7.—From an
orchard of 75 bearing apple trees
Robert Cox of Piedmont, Route 3,
sold $525.00 worth of apples in 1935,
In addition to having an abun
dance for canning and home con
sumption.
This record becomes even more
remarkable when it is learned that
several years ago the whole or
chard, composed chiefly* of deli
cious and Stayman varieties, was
practically dead from neglect, even
before it came into bearing.
“At that time”, relates Mr. Cox,
“a visit from the county agent
aroused my interest ip the appar
ently worthless trees, and caused
me to determine to give jthem* the
proper care.” 6' i « •
Mr. Cox followed carefully the
advice of the county agent and the
best practices of the community
regarding pruning, spraying, fer
tilization, and the disposal of dead
limbs. Almost 'at once the trees
responded to this better treatment
by producing profitable crops, and
each year has brought an increase
in returns from the small orchard.
“They have been a life-saver to
me”, Mr. Cox said of his apples
last season. “The orchard has been
the most profitable part of my
farm, and if it had not been for
my apple money' I coiild hot have
made it. The county agent gave me
the vision and showed me what to
do, and I have followed instruc
tions.”
