Club held its regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Sudie Jen nings on February 20th, with nine teen members and two visitors present. Since our January club meeting our club has been sadly bereaved by the death of our dear friend and club president, Mrs. W. T Walker. Mrs. Walker was always ready to do her part being president of the club and also a Local Leader. We hope to make our club the success ful one that Mrs. Walker wanted tt -and like her to always do our best. With Miss Harvey presiding, the following program was carried out: Song: “Coming Thru The Rye.” Scripture: Matt. 12:1-12 verses— Mildred McNeil. Lord’s Prayer in concert. Roll call and minutes, by the secretary. During the business part of our meeting Mrs. J. B. Holloway was elected president to fill the unex- pired term of Mrs. Walker, and Mrs. O. P. Furqueron was elected vice president. Reports were made by the dif ferent committees, after which we took up the educational features tor the month. Miss Harvey made an interesting talk on the Agricul ture Outlook for 1936. Our Demonstration Lesson for the month being “Meat for Food,” we discussed the following topics: 1. Food value of meat. 2. Effects of eating too much meat. 2. Effects of eating too little pro- teln. 4. How to choose meat. 5. Cooking meat and meat sub stitutes. v After several games and contests were enjoyed, Mrs. Jennings served delicious refreshments. We adjourned to meet with Miss Kathryn Parks and Mrs. Irving Barks in March. C. x Division Of Markets Work Is Educational To Farmers Of State Price of Common Cold Columbia, Feb. 29.—“Too many farmers still believe that market ing does not begin until the farm product is on truck or wagon ready to move”, says George E. Prince, chief of the Clemson College Ex tension Service Division of Markets, pointing out that while in many cases his division can and does as sist growers with actual marketing, ts primary function is educational. This educational service of course looks toward more profitable mar keting. “Too many fail to realize that marketing actually starts, often- cimes, with the selection of the proper variety and the use of good seed”, Mr. Prince continues. “Our experience indicates that many of the South Carolina growers are not giving enough thought to produc tion of quality products. The ex periences of vegetable growers would point to the fact that in periods of keen competition as at the present time, they must be con stantly studying the trade demands and keeping up to date in their grading and packing. Quality products always demand a pre mium.” Mr. Prince lists the following points as important toward the successful marketing of farm crops: 1. Selection of the right varieties and use of good seed. 2. Proper fertilization and cul tural methods so as to produce the quality demanded by the consum ing public. 3. Harvesting at the correct time so as to have the commodity in prime condition for shipment. 4. Proper grading and sizing, and attractive packaging. 5. Merchandising the product by the most economical means. “The Division of Markets assists the growers by studying market demands and conditions in compet ing sections and advising as to proper varieties to grow and sources of good seed. It also demon strates proper grading and pack ing, the loading of commodities on cars, and assists in locating buy ers who are handling the products offered.” From Anderson Independent. Common colds, according to Dr. Lloyd Arnold, of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, cost the nation $100,000,000 a year. In addition, there is a national in crease of 80,000 deaths between October and April, most of the fatalities being attributable to com mon colds and their complications. To cut down the cold bill, this authority urges people to keep fit and healthy, avoid excess of all kinds, keep in good physical and mental condition, eliminate over eating and stay away from infants and children, who are more sus ceptible, when a cold develops. Only by going promptly to bed and consulting a physician can a oerson with the sneezes and snif fles safeguard his own health and avoid being a social menace. The common jcold is one of man’s worst and most persistent enemies. It should always be treated as a po tential danger of serious signifi cance, whether viewed from the angle of prevention or cure. FINAL SETTLEMENT Town Tax Notice Florence, Feb. 29.—Sixteen hog feeding demonstrations conducted in 1935 by extension livestock ^specialists and county farm agents in Bamberg, Berkeley, Charleston, Dillon, Dorchester, Florence, Jas per, Lee, and Williamsburg showed again the economy and profit to farmers in feeding corn to hogs fn a balanced ration, according to figures reported by A. L. DuRant, Extension livestock specialist. These 16 demonstrations included 528 hogs which consumed 3441 bushels of com and 23,458 pounds ■of supplement used to balance the com ration. “These farmers, by weighing the hogs at the beginning and the close of the feeding period and by keep ing a complete record of the feed consumed during the feeding period, have been able to determine accurately the cost of producing pork”, says Mr. DuRant. “The aver age gain was 1.55 pounds per day rjud it required 6.3 bushels of corn iind 36 pounds of protein supple- orent to produce 100 pounds of gain. This protein-rich feed con- oisted of fish meal or a mixture of equal parts of fish meal and cottonseed meal. “The hogs sold for an average of $9.94 per 100 pounds. At this price the return for the com after deducting the cost of the fish meal was $1.45 per bushel. In other words, these farmers have found that they can sell their com through hogs for $1.45 per bushel Instead of selling it on the local cotn market for 50 to 60 cents. “Three of the sixteen fanners secured a return, of over $2.00 per bushel for corn * 1 consumed, the highest return being $2.74 per bushel. “With the present good prices U>i is interest in growing out hogS .market is again increasing farmers”, Mr. DuRant con- Nature’s Own Rival For Hen of Golden Egg Fame Bird Lays 648 Times in Two Years— and Thereby Hangs an In teresting Story The hen that laid the golden egg has a rival—a miraculous crea ture that laid 324 eggs a year for two consecutive years. A northern fanner raised her—and with egg prices up and the prizes she has won, her value ought to match the fabled hen, and no mistake! Southern farmers are told about this amazing bird who lays three times the national egg average per hen, in a new Chilean Nitrate advertisement appearing currently in this newspaper, under the cap tion Queen of All the Hens. An in teresting comparison is drawn be tween the egg-laying accomplish ments of the hen and the crop- producing abilities of the fertilizer. In both cases, it is pointed out, Mother Nature bestowed a special blessing, a natural balance of all the elements that combine to pro- luce champions. Scientists through the south are digging deeply into this question 6f natural balance of many ele ments in relation to plant feeding and plant health. It is becoming more and more obvious, researchers point out, that cotton, tobacco and other southern crops require, in ad dition to the three major elements, nitrogen, phosphorous and potash, a natural balance of minor ele ments as well—elements such as calcium,, magnesium, manganese, boron and many others. These minor elements—present; of course, in Chilean Nitrate because of the natural origin of this fertilizer- have assumed such importance in view of recent discoveries, that they are constantly being referred to as “the vital impurities.” AN ORDINANCE TO LEVY AN NUAL TAXES UPON THE TAX- ABLE PROPERTY WITHIN THE TOWN OF McCORMICK FOR THE PURPOSE OF MEETING CURRENT AND FISCAL EX PENSES AND TO PROVIDE FOR THE PAYMENT OF INTERES1 ON OUTSTANDING BONDS OF THE TOWN OF McCORMICK AND TO PROVIDE SINKING FUND FOR THE RETIREMENT OF SAME. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF McCORMICK, COUNTY OF Mc CORMICK, STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, IN REGULAR SES SION ASSEMBLED: SECTION 1. That a tax levy of six mills on every dollar’s worth of property, real and personal, not ex empt by law from taxation, situ ate and within the Corporate limits of the Town of McCormick, be and the same is hereby levied for cur rent purposes and to defray public expenses of the Town of McCormick for the fiscal year ending October 31st, 1935, and to meet current in debtedness contracted by said Town for general Corporate purposes. SECTION 2. That over and above and in addition to the levy of six (6) mills as hereinabove provided in Section 1, of this Ordinance, a levy of Seven (7) Mills be and is hereby made upon every dollar’s worth of property, real and per sonal, not exempt by law from tax ation, situate and within the Cor porate limits of the Town of Mc Cormick, and the same is hereby levied for the purpose of raising taxes to meet the interest accru ing on Thirty Thousand ($30,000.00) Dollars Town of McCormick Bonds issued and sold for the purpose of aiding in the construction of pub lic buildings of the County of Mc Cormick, and to create a sinking fund to be used in the retirement and payment of said bonds. SECTION 3. That over and above and in addition to the levy of Six (6) Mills and Seven (7) Mills, as hereinabove provided in Section One and Two respectively, of this Ordinance, a levy of Thirty-One (31) Mills be and is hereby made upon every dollar’s worth of prop erty, real and personal, not exempt by law from taxation, situate and within the Corporate limits of the Town of McCormick, and the same is hereby levied for the purpose of raising the taxes to meet the interest accruing on Twenty-Seven Thousand ($27,000.00) Dollars Elec tric Lighting Plant Bonds of the Town of McCormick dated July 1st 1925, and Fifty-Two Thousand ($52,000.00) Dollars Water Works System Bonds of the Town of Mc Cormick, dated July 1st, 1925, and Forty-Three Thousand ($43,000.00) Dollars Sewerage System Bonds ol the Town of McCormick dated July 1st, 1925. and to create a sinkin fund to be used in the retirement and payment of said bonds. Wyche, United States Attorney for the Western District of South Carolina, under the direction of the Attorney Gen eral, has filed an application in the District Court of the United States for the Western District of South Carolina, stating that the United States is desirous of pur chasing, under the provisions of the Weeks Forestry Act (36 Stat. 961) certain lands in Edgefield and McCormick Counties, South Caro lina, consisting of the tracts here inabove set forth, containing in the aggregate two thousand seven hundred sixty-four and 80-100 (2,764.80) acres, more or less, and all of said lands being fully de scribed by surveys made by the Forest Service of The United States, which said surveys and descriptions are fully set out in the applica tion filed by the United States Attorney in the office of the Clerk: of the United States District Court, at Greenville, South Caro lina, and that you may be the own er, or the supposed owner of the -everal tracts of land, or a part thereof, or have some right,, title, or interest therein, or in some part thereof. Wherefore, you are reouired to come forward on the 13th day of April, 1936, at three o’clock, p. m., at the United States District Court, to be holden at. Greenville, South Carolina, and file objections, if any you have, to the proposed purchase of said lands, otherwise- a 4 judgment will be entered against you.
