Assigned to such a part in the Shirley Temple picture, “Bright Byes,” little Jane astounded critics with her understanding portrayal of the obnoxious, snobbish child who found such great delight in torturing the great child star. Despite the excellence of her per- formance in this role, studio offi cials recognized the latent ability of this child as an all-round actress and decided to cast her in an en tirely different type of part. The picture ‘'Ginger,” vindicated the judgment of the studio offi- cials. Here her flair for comedy pnd her sense of dramatic values were given full sway and critics proclaimed Jane an actress of major ability. Tn “This Is the Life,” Jane With ers comes into her own, not only as a dramatic actress of mature and seasoned talent, but also as singer and dancer. This picture finds Jane singing, dancing and clowning as the per forming child star, who desires only to be a ndlTfiai child. But, she is made the virtual slave of her Unscrupulous guardians- who are ig a “meal ticket” ol her. Amid the conflict and the try ing times of the War Between the States days, Shirley Temple blithe ly threads her way as the heroine of “The Littlest Rebel,” at the Hollywood Theater Friday and Saturday. As the tiniest Confeder ate in Virginia, she plays her most dramatic role. John Boles and Karen Morley are her parents. Separated by the war, they are joined just before Miss Morley succumbs to its rig ors. Boles, though he fears ap prehension as a spy, undertakes to deliver the child to her aunt in Richmond. He is trapped by a Yankee offi cer, Jack Holt, but Holt surren ders to Shirley’s charms, and tries to help them through the line. When their plot fails, both Holt and Boles are in hot water. How the little girl goes to the President of the Union to save her daddy and her friend is revealed in the climax of “The Litlest Rebel.” Bill Robinson, the colored genius of tap dancing, is again Shirley’s companion in this picture. Between them they manage some deft and charming exhibitions of footwork. Prominent in the supporting cast are Guinn Williams, as a Yankee soldier, and Frank Mc- Glynn, famous for his Abraham Lincoln characterizations. David Butler directed. Feeding Schools For Dairy Farmers Clemson, Feb. 22.—A series of feeding schools for dairy farmers scheduled for eight points in the state for the first two weeks in March will be one of the most comprehensive educational projects ever attempted for the dairy farm ers of this state; according to C.
