Rental and benefit payments to
farmers in AAA programs are ex
pected to re^ch about $597,280,000
for the calendar year 1935, accord
ing to latest revised AAA estimates.
Of this total, $125,413,000 will go
to cotton producers, $130,500,000
wheat growers, $248,696,000
com-hcg raisers, $30,125,000 to toi*
bacco producers, $50,551,000 to
sugar growers, $3,583,000 to peanut
producers, .$6,612,000 to rice pro
ducers, and $1,800,000 to rye grow-
ers.

Prices received by farmers for
their products averaged 36 per cent
of fair-exchange value as of No
vember 15—a decline of one per
cent from the preyious month, but
eight per cent higher than at this
date a year earlier? Of the 15
commodities designated as basic
under the Adjustment Act, only
two types of tobacco and milk re
tailed directly by farmers were
, above parity, or fair-exchange lev
els, while hogs, which had been at
105 per cent the previous month,
slipped down to 94 per cent of par
ity.

period of years, for large potato
crops, which are invariably follow
ed by small crops and high prices.
Both farmers and consumers real
ize most good from normal crops.
Consumers have paid an average of
$2.11 per bushel for potatoes when
years of above normal crops and
short crops are considered ^together,
as compared to $1.91 per bushel in
years of normal crops. The Gov
ernment potato program seeks to
eliminate wide fluctuations in the
size of crops and prices, and to pro
mote normal-size crops which give
prices fair to both consumer and
producer. ^

The reciprocal trade Agreement
jgecently signed by Canada and the
United States is regarded by Sec
retary Wallace as one of the most
Important steps yet taken by this
country toward recovery of foreign
outlets for its agricultural and in
dustrial products. To farmers of
the United States the agreement
has significance nbt only because it
assures increases in exports of their
products to Canada, but also be
cause the acceleration of exports of
U. S. industrial products, which is
expected to follow the agreement,

Good milk is pleasant to the
taste. When it’s unpleasant—don’t
blame the milk.
Milk flavor and odor depend
largely upon what and when cows
are fed and the care given milk by
dairymen and housewives. Some
feeds affect the palatability of
milk. Others have hardly any ef
fect. Proper aeration and cooling
of milk, and storing at low tem
peratures, reduces feed flavors and
odors, sometimes eliminating them.
To avoid undesirable flavors
many dairymen feed highly flavor-
ad feeds after milking. Silage made
^rom corn, alfalfa, sweetclover, or
Soybeans; and green alfalfa, cab
bage, turnips, rape, and kale when
known vitamins necessary for
health and growth.”
In the way of immediate garden
preparations Mr. Schilletter sug
gests that gardeners (a) prepare
hotbeds now for sowing seeds in
January, and (b) make planting
-•.oticeable flavors in milk, tests by

As to planting the horticulturist
reminds us that even in December
we may plant (1) English peas of
smooth, round type for early spring
crop; (2) cabbage plants if not
enough have been set to supply the
early spring needs; <3) cabbage,
kale, lettuce, onion, and spinach for
succession; (4) strav/berry, dewber
ry, raspberry, and blackberry plants
for home use.
In this connection he suggests
also that garden crops now in the
ground such as beets, carrots,
parsnips, and salsify can be left
where grown and dug as wanted,
though beets and carrots later in
the season should have a light fur
row thrown over the beds for pro
tection.
