We have had a few days of cold
weather. Several nice hogs have
been killed in this section.
Mrs. J. B. Jennings has been
crippled with rheumatism for some
time, but cai> get about a little
better at this writing.
Mrs. Earl White spent Monday

Mr. and Mrs. Guy Jennings spent

Mrs. Guy Jennings gave her
mother, Mrs. W. B. White, a sur
prise birthday dinner. All of her
children and a number of friends
gathered at Mrs. Jennings’ early in
the morning, November 23rd, then
sent for her mother to come, and
such a surprise for her. Plenty of
nice picnic dinner was spread on a
long table in the sunshine, and lots
of nice presents were also a sur
prise for her. She was 60 years old.

Club Meets
McCormick County is again
lined up with every other county
in the state and every state in the
union in the annual drive for funds
to fight Tuberculosis, the cause of
more deaths in our county between,
the ages of 15 and 45 than any
other disease. Mr. J. Fred Buzhardt 1
is the county chairman and he has
a strong committee co-operating
to sell Christmas Seals for this
purpose. ’
This year marks the twenty-
ninth appearance of these bright to men by their appearance on
tuberculous. The message they
bring, and to which it behoq.ves
all of us to give ear, is that tuberr
culosis is still this country’s great
est public health problem. It causes
70,000 deaths annually, twice as
many as automobile accidents. It
causes over a billion dollars
economic loss each year. Christ

Bethany Home Demonstration Club
will give a Christmas party, at
the school house. Games, singing
and other amusements will be en
joyed. During the evening a cake,
baked by Mrs. R. H. Quarles, will be
given.
Other delicious food will be sold
during the evening. Everyone is
cordially invited to come and bring
some one with him.

Entertained
Mrs. E. L. McAlijJier was hostess
at the November nneeting of the
Chestnut Ridge Home Demonstra
tion Club. Seventeen members and
two visitors were present.
Mrs. C. A. Gilbert, president,
read the 100th Psalm, and Mrs. E.
M. Price led in prayer. This was
followed by the roll call and min
utes of last meeting. The club
song for the month was then sung.
After this Miss Harvey in giving
her demonstration on food, ex
plained why she stressed the im
portance of two vegetables a day
besides potatoes: The minerals and
vitamins we get from vegetables,
especially leafy ones, are essential
to good health.
After the demonstration, several
members cf the club gave a little
playlet, ‘■Grandmother’s Treasure
Chest”. One thing we are proud
to report at this meeting was that
Mrs. Frank Pinson brought eight
books to the club to be distributed
among club members. She ex
pressed her desire of a circulating
library being started in the club.
All these books were by a well
known author whose writings are
elevating and uplifting. The fac
that this was National Book Week
made Mrs. Pinson’s contribution
more significant. It is things lik:
this that will help to eventually
make this community the kind of
community we’d like it to be. 1
will require co-operation, unsel
fishness and lots of work but with
Miss Harvey’s help we hope to ac
complish lots in the next year o:

McCain on Wednesday afternoon of
last week. The living room was
thrown with the dining room and
both beautifully arranged with fall
flowers and ferns. Assisting Mrs.
McCain were Mrs. Edgar Price, Mrs.
James Keown, Mrs. J. T. Holliday,
Miss Olivia Holliday and Mrs.
Winston Campbell.
A Thanksgiving program was
carried out with the following tak

and Mrs. M. C. White.
After the business session con
ducted by the president, Mrs. Edgar
Price, Mrs. T. C. Faulkner and Mrs.
M. C. White led the group in a
period cf recreation.
The hostesses served delicious
pineapple salad with baked ham
sandwiches and Russian Tea.
That the true Thanksgiving spirit
might prevail, members of the class
brought gifts of fruit and groceries
to be sent to some less fortunate.
