H. D. Club Meets
The Chestnut Ridge Home Dem-
•nstration Club held its regular
meeting on Friday, October 25th, at
the home of Mrs. Vance Ellison

present.
A program on "Being a Good
Weiglibor” had been arranged by
Mbs. C. A. Gilbert.
The devotional was conducted by
Mrs. Gilbert, followed by the song,

"What My Neighbors Mean to Me;”
The meeting was then turned

November 11-17
GOVERNOR JOHNSTON HAS
GIVEN HIS HEARTY ENDORSE
MENT TO THE PROGRAM

Governor Olin D. Johnston has
given his hearty endorsement to
plans for observing American Edu
cation week. November 11-17, and
has prepared a proclamation ask
ing South Carolinians to join in its
celebration.
Citing education as the greatest
single driving force in the world
Governor Johnston urged everyone
to visit the schools, and suggested
that schopl officials observe the
week by dedicating programs and
exercises to education.
The governor’s proclamation

“The people of our country and
of our state are being called upon
to observe ■ the week of November.
11-17 as American Education week.
“This period is to’b6’devoted to
the stressing of education as a vital
need of our people and to the need
for development of our schools. The
1935 theme, ‘The School and De
mocracy,’ is especially significant
and apt at this time when so 'muchi
public attention is being focused-
upon schools and education in gen
eral.
“Education is the greatest single
driving force in the world today.
Without it reUgion, science, com
merce and social intercourse would
remain in a backward and,dormant
state. It is essential to our prog
ress as a civilized people. Euijpa-
tion represents the accumulated
thought and labor of the ages.
Without it, democratic government
could not exist.
“Our American civilization has
made wonderful progress becauss
of the fact that our government
was founded upon the belief that
every child, irrespective of the cir
cumstances of its birth, should be
assured equal school opportunities.
This ideal has permeated our legis
lative enactments and public edu
cational structure in South Caro
lina.
“During this week I urge that
the citizens of South Carolina take
part in its observance, visit their
tatoes,” was presented.
Each member contributed to a
round-table discussion on ways of
cooking and serving vegetables.
Each one was then asked to give
suggestions for improving their
club. After all business was at
tended to, lunch was enjoyed dur
ing the noon hour. During the
recreation period, every one listen
ed over the radio, to the National
1-H Club Program, in which dif
ferent members of South Carolina
Extension Division took part. Those
taking part were: Miss Patterson
and Mr. W. A. King, presidents of
Winthrop and Clemson College 4-H
Clubs, Virginia Garvin, Aiken
