COLUMBIA, Oct. 14.—With a
program that bristles with bright
features, with the most elaborate
and most diversified displays in its
history, with every indication of a
record breaking attendance, and
with an enthusiastic interest be
ing shown in all parts of South
Carolina, the State Fair, which
jCpens in Columbia Monday, Qeto-

•week, *§ destined to set up a new
mark. From every angle the fair
can be viewed only through rosy
glasses.
D. D. Witcover, the president, and
Paul V. Moore, the secretary, are
experienced fair men who can see
what is coming. Sometimes be
fore a fair they are optimistic,
sometimes they frankly are dis
couraged. But this year they can
see nothing but bright prospects.
They know that the exhibits are
setting a new high standard of ex
cellence, they know their enter
tainment program is tops, they
know that their sports program
with the Carolina-Clemson game
as the headliner is a pip. They
also are glad that Governor John
ston has accepted an invitation to
speak on Tuesday, October 22,
which has been designated as gov
ernor’s day. Monday is opening
day, Wednesday is Confederate and
agricultural day, Thursday is col
lege day with the big football
classic at noon, Friday is school
day when all children are admitted
free and teachers are too, when
they accompany groups. Saturday
Is closing day.
This year’s grandstand show is a
smashing revue at night with the
finest of vaudeville acts in the af
ternoon. The midway is the same
as used at the biggest state fairs.
The cattle exhibits are again open
to the world, meaning a wider and
■ more interesting display. All
space in the big steel building has
gone.

that the outlook for the forthcom
ing fair is the most encouraging
since 1921,” J. A. Mitchell, secre
tary of the association, said yester
day. “Economic conditions are
good, and crops are yielding an ex
cellent harvest.”
The Anderson Fair is an agricul
tural fair, but those seeking amuse
ments after making the rounds of
the various exhibits will find them
in abundance.

of Works Progress Administration,

paring the first month’s payroll
are being prepared to be mailed
to participating schools, and unless
these applications are received
soon, there is danger of losing the

Honored At .Reception
Miss Mary Kennedy and Dr. Kate
Neel Dale, who are outstanding
missionaries of the Associate Rs-
Presbyterian church in the
f oreign fic T d, were girests of honor
it an informal reception given on
Saturday afternoon, October 5f.h
from four till six o’clock by Dr.
Samuel Reid, pastor of the Pressly
Memorial church, and Mrs. Reid,
at their home here. More than a
mndred guests called during the
appointed hours to meet these
charming women. Miss Kennedy
who is at home from India on fur
lough and Dr. Dale from Mexico
are both from Troy and have a
wide family connection in this sec
tion. Iced punch and sandwiches
were served throughout the after
noon by a group of the young
women of the church.
The local church was filled to Its
capacity the following Sabbath
evening when these women spoke
of the work in their respective
fields. Miss Kennedy had on dis
play suits of clothing and many
other interesting articles which
she had brought from India. They
also spoke at two services in Mt.
Carmel during the day.

GREENWOOD, Oct. 11.—Sixty
young men from North and South
Carolina are to be enlisted in the-
United States Navy during the
month of October. Immediately
after enlistment these men will be
sent to the Naval Training Station,
Norfolk, Va., where they will be
given twelve weeks’ instructions in
general requirements of Naval life,
before being assigned to one of the
ships of the United States Fleet.
To be eligible for enlistment a
yerng man must be between seven
teen and twenty-five years of age,
