C BIG DOUBLE CIRCUS HAS VAST PROGRAM The world’s newest big show, the Cole Bros.-Clyde Beatty Circus fresh from a five year European tour will exhibit in Greenwood, Saturday, October 5. » The No. 1 advertising car. the first of three in advance of the Colossus of all amusements, is now in this vicinity. Billposters, bannermen, lithographers, radio men and press agents are herald ing the great event, and soon ev eryone will be planning for a gala visit to the world’s largest “big top,” the center of the biggest can vas city ever assembled to thrill, entertain and amuse a great and discriminating populace. Traveling on three trains of double-length steel railroad cars, the giant of super-circuses will i bring 1080 people, 812 menagerie animals, five herds of elephants and 500 horses. Pre-eminent features is Clyde Beatty’s trained wild animal exhi bition. Beatty is acknowledged to be the greatest wild animal train er of all time. There are 400 performers includ ing the famous Nelson family of acrobats; the Imperial Harolds; the Flying Thrillers: Allen King and his cage of fury; Harietta, the famous equestrienne, and 60 inter nationally celebrated and beloved clowns. The Cole Bros.-Clyde Beatty horse fair has become a feature amazing in its appeal throughout the North American continent. The big holiday will be ushered in with an immense street parade at 11 a. m. Upwards of 500 horses, three score of elaborately carved and gilded allegorical floats and tableau wagons together with many cages and open dens of Clyde Beatty’s animals will be seen in the .processional. There will be five HARIETTA, EQUESTRIENNE herds of elephants and two cara vans of camels from the great des ert. Five bands and two steam calliopes will furnish music. Large Rattle Snake Killed By Lady MT. CARMEL, Sept. 20.—A Rattle snake forty four inches long, six inches around the body was killed in the yard of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Curtis this afternoon by their daughter, Miss Sara Curtis. Rattles can be seen at the store of N. S. Scott. V ERA Education Program In Effect In McCormick County The ERA Education Program for McCormick County was put into action on Monday, September 16th. following a conference held with the selected teachers in the office of the County Superintendent of Education. At present, a recruiting campaign is being made by the teachers, preparatory to the opening of classes in the near future, in Lit eracy, Continuation, Home Eco nomics, and Agriculture. Mrs. Lewis C. Rich will supervise this department of education in the county. XXI Baptists Meet At Greenwood; Reports Heard Membership Of Abbeville Associa tion Announced As Being 6,445 GREENWOOD, Sept. 21.—The 66th annual meeting of the Abbe ville Baptist association convened yesterday morning with the First Baptist church of Greenwood. Outstanding on the opening program were the reports on mis sions by the Rev. C. A. Westbrook; the address by Dr. C. A. Jones, of Columbia, and the sermon deliv ered by the Rev. Lewis M. Smith, of South Greenwood. Officers elected were: Dr. Chas. F. Sims, moderator; the Rev. C. Westbrook, assistant modera tor, and Sam Smith, clerk. At the meeting today reports were heard on Sunday school and 3. T. U. work, Connie Maxwell or phanage, the Baptist hospital, the relief and annuity board, social service, public welfare and evangel ism. Approximately 275 repre sentatives of the churches in the association were in attendance. Reports Discussed The reports were discussed by the Rev. J. E. Ledbetter on Sunday School and B. T. U. work; M. G. Rhodes on the orphanage; the Rev. R. I. Coirbett and the Rev. T. D. Lide on the hospital; the Rev. B. F. Harty on the relief and annuity board*and the Rev. B. M. Cheatham on social service and public morals. Christian education, denomina tional literature and women’s work were the main topics at the ses sion yesterday afternoon. The principal speakers included Dr. W. C. Allen, editor of the Baptist Courier; the Rev. R. F. Terrell, business manager of the Courier; Dr. J. R. Jester, Mrs. C. A. West brook and the Rev. O. L. Orr. Information compiled from the 28 church reports to the associa tion showed: total membership of all churches, 6,445; enrolled in the Sunday schools, 4,849; baptisms this year, 3,021; total additions to all churches, 582; contributions for local work, $32,435.88; contribu tions to all mission causes, $12,- 515.85; grand total of all contribu tions, $44,951.73. 1X1 THINGS WORTH KNOWING There are almost 1,100 theatres in Australia wired for sound.
