Early Measurement Of Cotton Contract Acres Is Suggested Cotton growers who have signed ndfustment contracts under the Agricultural Adjustment Act may liable to avoid unnecessary ex penditures by making careful measurements of the land which they intend to plant to cotton, be- tae they actually prepare the land, Ghnnty Agent E. L. Rogers points "last year it was necessary in same instances to reduce the num ber of planted acres in order to 'comply accurately with the provi sions of the contract the producer had signed,” the county agent says. “If every producer measures his land accurately before preparing it for planting, and thus makes sure that he is complying with his con tract, he will avoid the possibility of wasted effort and useless ex pense for seed and fertilizer. He will also be able to take full ad vantage of the opportunity to plant food and feed crops on the rented acres.” Compliance with cotton adjust ment contracts will be checked this year as it was checked last year. Rented acres, as well as those planted to cotton, will be measured accurately and compliance will be certified only when it is found that all provisions of the contract have I been carried out. Some of the previous restrictions on the use of rented acreage have been modified this year and pro ducers will not be limited in their use of such acres for food and feed crops except in that their produc tion of wheat, rice, and r peanuts must nqt exceed their production during the base period. Polk & Company, handling official automobile registrations for the United States, show that Chevrolet led their nearest competitor in sales in 1934. “The Company is now operating its huge assembly plant in Atlanta. St. John Ervine, the brilliant Irish dramatist, argues that an in justice has been done to Ananias and Sapphira. They are too hastily condemned, he thinks, as liars and embezzlers. After all, the experi ment of the first disciples with communism was a failure. Appar ently Ananias and his wife doubted its success, and so personally ap propriated a part of the price re ceived for the sale of their prop erty as a reserve fund to help them meet their obligations in lean days ahead. Why should they not be praised for their farsighted pru dence. rather than condemned as contemptible hypocrites? Much can be said for this con tention. We can agree that the attempt of the disciples to pool their resources in a common store was a noble experiment in Chris tian brotherhood. Peter makes this clear in his reply, “Even after the sale, was the money not yours to do as you pleased about it?” (vs. 4) It was perfectly proper for the couple, after disposing of their property, to retain a portion of the proceeds for their own uses. They were not miserly for they might have refused to co-operate at all. This Utopian scheme, we must re member, was voluntary.
