According to the statement some associations have already sent in applications for more loans than were made by the associations last year. Many of these applications are from old members of the asso ciations but there are also many coming in from fanners who did not^ avail themselves of the credit service offered by the associations last year. . ;j . Outvwu r Peter Preaches at Pentecost ; \ Lesson for February 10th. Acts 2. Golden Text: Acts 2:38. The day of Pentecost, when Peter preached the famous sermon that led to the conversion and baptism of some 3,000 souls, is of monfientous significance in the his tory of the Christian church. The common opinion, however, that it is the birthday of the church is false, for the church existed before Pentecost. Neither was it the day upon which began the descent of the Holy Spirit, for the v disciples were already under its inspired in fluence. Wiiat makes Pentecost so significant is that it was a day of marvelous power, a power to win olhers to the Christian Society. It marks the beginning of the evan gelistic activity of the church. Here the disciples were called to the task of witness-bearing. The su preme lact about the day is not that there occurred a spectacular visitation of the Spirit, but that Peter and the others gave testi mony to "the wonderful works of God" with such persuasive energy as to sweep a multitude into the household of faith. Consider how impressive is this demonstration in the light of its immediate background. Christ had been crucified only a few weeks be fore. His frightened disciples had all fled in dismay. And now in the very city where their Master had teen executed, and in utter disre gard of what the authorities re sponsible for the crucifixion nigh' think, they joyfully spoke in vari ous tongues, and proclaimed the resurrection and triumph of Jesus! Now Peter’s address is of mor: than ordinary interest because, a^ Dr. McGiffert says, "it constitutes the earliest extant Christian apology.’’ At Pentecost Peter, speaking not simply for himself but for all of the disciples as well offered proof that his Master, though done to death at Calvary, was the promised Messiah. And what a profound impression this sermon made! Stung to the depth of their- hearts the people cried, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
