In The 1935 Models
“THE EXTENDED SPRINGBASE
WITH COMFORT ZONE
SEATING”
Ford is introducing in the 1935 j
models “the extended springbaso
with comfort zone seating.” This
basic Ford development greatly im- !
proves riding comfort while retain
ing “free action on all four wheels.”
The “better ride” qualities of the
new car have been developed
through what is virtually a revolu-
tionary change in the seating ar
rangement, plus an entirely new
principle in “springbase” design.
The seats have been moved forward
so that all passengers fide now be
tween the axles. The rear seat is
eight and a half inches further for
ward of its position in the former
model, bringing passengers closer
to the center of the car and min
imizing the effect of bumps in driv
ing over uneven roads.
In conjunction with this change,
softer, longer springs have been
provided in an unusual type of
mounting. The front springs, in
creased seven and five-eighths
inches in length, are now mounted
three and five eighths inches in
front of the axle; the new longer
rear springs two and a half inches
further to the rear than in the for
mer models of the V-8. The springs
have been softened and their de
sign changed so as to give almost
perfect synchronization with each
other. The leaves have been con
siderably widened—modified and
tapered for greater flexibility and
to eliminate squeaks.
In the new V-8, the spring base
is 123 1-8 inches, which means that
passengers now ride in a car with
the equivalent of that length
wheelbase, yCt a car with riding
qualities far in excess of the ordi
nary automobile regardless of
wheelbase length. At the same time,
retaining the original 112-inch
wheelbase gives the new car all the
maneuverability of the former
models.
Other important changes in the
seats, too, have added greater com
fort to the 1935 Fdrd. Wider seats,
varying from four and a half to
five and a half inches according to
body styles, more than in the 1934

Ford, with a correspouding increase
in the width of the car, ipake it
possible now to ride Jhree in front
as comfortably as in the rear com
partment. More elbow room has
been provided. A newly designed
gear shift lever also adds . to the
comfort of riding in front.
The exceptionally low center of
gravity in the new car also adds
considerably to the better riding
qualities of the V-8.
Twelve body styles are introduced
in the 1935 Ford series. The nine
Ue Luxe models are the Tudor
Sedan and Fordor sedan, Tudor and
Fordor “touring” sedans with
trunks; Tudor and Fordor sedans,
without trunks; 3 and 5-window
coupes, roadster, cabriolet and
phaeton. In the low-priced mod
els are the 5-window business
coupe, Tudor Sedan and Fordor
Sedan.
The 1935 V-8 is a decidedly larger
car in appearance, actually is long
er, measured from bumper tc
bumper. It not only looks the
part, but is a big car—almost eight
inches longer.
The streamline effect carries
through artistically from the slop
ing new radiator shell to the smart
ly modern rear end with wide
wing fenders in front, and narrow
newly styled fenders barely pro
jecting beyond the body over the
rear wheels.
Its distinctive lines are accentu
ated by smart, box-shaped rectan
gular louvers with rustless steel
moulding, which add their quota of
beauty to the front end of the car.
The radiator grille is new also,
chrome plated in the De Luxe
models and of enamel finish to
harmonize with the color of the
body in lower priced models. The
radiator emblem, a modernistic
winged V-8, is new, as are the

bullet-shaped head 'lamps in' body
1 colors, with rustless steel rims. All
De Luxe models have two tail,.lights
and two horns.
The new Ford bodies are of steel,
electrically welded into a one-piece
construction, wood being entirely
eliminated for any structural pur
pose. To protect the finish of the
car and at the same time stiffen
the lower edge of the fenders, a
gutter-like bead on the lower edge
drains off water and mud below
the running boards, eliminating the
splashing of the body which tin
conventional type fender does not
While the stronger body is one of
the outstanding features that as
sure new high standards of safety
in the V-8, other important
changes also contribute materially.
New weight distribution gives bet
ter balance. The low center
gravity, with a decidedly more rug
ged frame construction, makes it
hold the road better and it “takes
the turns” five to seven miles an
hour faster than last year’s Ford.
Interiors of all cars are most at
tractive, echoing the modernistic
lines of the exteriors. The instru
ment panel is of striking design,
matching in color the interior trim
of the car. The attractively de
signed speedometer and gauges are
conveniently placed in full view of
the driver with a large glove and
package compartment at the ex
treme right. In between are the
control knobs in harmonizing col
ors.
The new thin scalloped steering
wheel, with anti-skid grips on the
rim, also carries through the color
scheme. The V-8 emblem and
lights controls are found in the
center of the wheel. Two new in
struments are provided for the De
