With Gail Patrick, Monte Blue and Raymond Hatton in the chief supporting roles, the film also pre sents the newest discovery among child actors, little four-year-old Billy Lee, who plays an important role as Gail Patrick’s son. “Wagon Wheels” was adapted from the Zane Grey novel “Fight- 5 ng Caravans” and depicts the hardships, perils and romantic lives of the sturdy, adventuring pioneers who helped to forge an empire by their conquest of the West. But all along the trail they are beset by Indians, and it is onlj when they have crossed the West ern Slope and are almost within srht of Oregon, that the Indians at ack with the intention of slaughtering the members of the err avan. - Blue’s true nature becomes evi- COLUMBIA, Nov. 10.—Of the $18,607,097 loaned to over 11,000 South Carolina farmers during the period from June 1, 1933, to Oc tober 31,' 1C34, by the Federal Land Bank of Columbia and the Land Bank Commissioner, over $15,444,- 000 went to refinance debts already owed by the (farmer-borrowers, according to Julian H. Scarborough’; president of the Federal Land Bank of Columbia. The South Carolina farmers ac cording to these figures used 83 cents out of every dollar of Federal Land Bank and Land Bank Com missioner’s loans to repay their old creditors. “In many cases”, Mr. Scar borough said, “these creditors were pressing for payment and threat ening foreclosure. In these cases the loans provided farmers with means to repay such creditors and avoid foreclosure. Records kept by the land bank and Land Bank Commissioner show that $2,847,000 of the money loaned South ^Carolina farmers went to pay farmers’ debts to com mercial banks, including debts to banks in the hands‘of receivers and conservators; $800,000 debts to in surance companies; $2,865,000 debts to joint stock land banks; $1,135,000 to pay taxes; $149,000 debts to mer chants and $7,648,000 farmers’ debts to a wide group of unclassi fied creditors, including mortgage loan companies; private mortgage lenders, retired farmers and other farm creditors. Of the sum not employed in re financing, $2,326,000 was used for such purposes as the purchase of land and equipment, the construc tion or improvement of buildings, and for general agricultural uses, including the provision of capital while about $837,000 was used for other purposes such as redemption or repurchase of land foreclosed, for loan fees, etc. “It is very evident”, said Mr. Scarborough in making the figures public, “that the refinancing pro gram does not represent an impor tant increase in the debt overhead of the farming industry in South Carolina because over 83 per cent of the loans closed has been used to refinance existing debts.” 'ftledicatetU Ingredients of V'icks VapoRub in Convenient Candy Form VICKS COUGH DROP WANT ADV. The law prescribes that all rnalr citizens between the ages of 21 and 55 years must pay $2.00 commuta tion tax or work six days on the public roads. Commutation tax is included ir property tax receipt. T. J. PRICE. It is a simple matter to pack nice school lunch occasionally, but when it comes to packing one ev ery day for eight, nine,, or ten months cf the year, it becomes quite a problem. The ideal lunches are those which are perfectly bal anced from the standpoint of nu trition, are easily packed, and yet different enough from day to day so that there is no monotony—here is where planning ahead helps. The easiest way to handle the school lunch problem is to plan for them in advance, just as for any other meal. Have fruits, crackers and cookies, sandwich spreads, and jellies cn hand for the lunch boxes. On the day before choose a larger cut cf meat than is needed for one meal and use what is left for -sand wiches. Cold meats, such as roast beef, pork, lamb and veal, baked ham, corned beef, boiled’ tongue, and meat leaf are all excellent for sandwiches when sliced thin. Fur ther variety may be gained in sandwiches by using different kinds of bread and cutting it in different shapes. Cold, cooked meats may be' ground and used to good advantage for sandwich fillings. Here is a recipe fbr one suggested by Inez S. Willson; home economist. Ham Salad Sandwich Filling. 1 cup ground baked ham, 1 cup celery, chopped very fine,. 1 hard-cooked egg, chopped, 1 tablespoon cream, 1 teaspoon lai—rtn Jcetchap, Few drojps Worcestershire ^ jfauce. Combftie ham, celery, and egg, season with ketchup'and WOrcesty ershire sauce and moisten with cream. This is especially good with . rye bread. A very satisfyifig, as well as an easily prepared luncheon fdr the child who comes home to lunch is a nourishing hot soup and a* meat sandwich. I like to serve them together. A creamed, vegetable soup, such as potato and carrot 'oup or a corn chowder, is relished .by children, and this is a luncheon nenu that the adults ■ will enjoy, too. \ THINGS WORTH KNOWING To perpetuate America’s nut trees, a project is under way t-o collect nuts at historic sites and to plant 5.000.000 of these nuts in the next five years.
