SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One Year $1.00 Six Months .75 Three Months.50 Protect Animals From Screw-Worms CLEMSON COLLEGE, Oct. 13.— Since screw-worm losses to cattle and horses have been reported in widely separated communities in the south eastern portion of South Carolina, animal owners are ad vised by W. C. Nettles, extension entomologist, to adopt practices which will prevent a recurrence or spread of the trouble. Mr. Nettles urges careful watch on all animals for indications of «crew-worm infestations, such as a discharge of blood and serum from a wound, and the yellowish egg masses of the flies. For prevention and control Mr. Nettles quotes the U. S. Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine suggestions. | 1. Do not castrate, dehorn, mark, or brand animals during the screw- worm season, that is between May 1 and November 15. If such work must be done, apply pine-tar oil to and around the wounds and re peat as often as necessary. 2. Treat all injuries with pine tar oil. 3. Burn all carcasses of animals dying from screw-worms. 4. Control breeding so that young are born between November 15 and May 1. Dr. W. K. Lewis, State Veterina rian, Clemson College Livestock Sanitary Commission, Columbia, S. C., should be notified at once of the presence of the screw-worm, Mr. Nettles advises. In the mean time the screw-worms should be killed with commercial grade Benzol. The blood and serum should be wiped away and Benzol poured into the wound. After the maggots are killed, or in about two or three minutes, the wound and area around it should be lightly but thoroughly treated with pine-tar oil. In case of an especially heavy infestation in a valuable animal, a local veterinarian should be called immediately. Blanchard Addresses Baptist Brotherhood Here At a special meeting of the Bap tist Brotherhood at the Community House here Tuesday night, with the president, Mr. J. S. Dukes, pre siding, Mr. Walter E.
