Foresight is the steering wheel to guide us aright in. our words and actions—the . speed throttle and brake lever which enables us to move ahead with dispatch and due safety—it is the mental calcula tion of cause and effect with re spect to the seconds, minutes, hours, days and years, through which we are steadily passing. Contemplating, cause and effec sharpens the foresight,, and the constant exercise of foresight in cur work will eliminate many of the “ifs” that are so easily detected with the hindsight. Every adult member of the church is ex pected to give the earnings of that day to the support fund of Epworth Orphanage. The children of the church will find some job at which they can earn money. In some in stances groups’of children will go to the cotton fields and work for their less fortunate friends at Ep- worth Orphanage. Work Day af- ' fords a splendid opportunity to teach children thef blessings of un selfish giving, and at the same time gives much assistance in the work of caring for our orphan chil- •dren. There are two Methodist Confer- cnces in South Carolina with a to tal membership of 150,000. If one day's earnings of this large group of people were made available for toe use of Epworth Orphanage, no farther assistance would be needed for the entire year. It is not ask ing tcq. much to urge the entire membership to give just one day cat of the whole year to the work cf caring for orphan children. The offering is supposed to be made in all of the more than 800 Methodist churches in South Carolina on Sunday, September 16th. The Work Day idea is carried out by ot her denominations in South Carolina. The Baptists, Presby terians and Episcopalians observe Thanksgiving as the day on which their annual offering is made to toeir respective orphanages. They stress the idea of giving at least one day’s work to the support of toeir church homes for orphan children. • The Work Day fund is a unique nne in that every penny received goes directly into the building of character in the lives of neglected unfortunate children.
