PERSONS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE
FOR CHIEF MAGISTRATE.
Columbia, Aug. 6.—^Available en
rollment returns indicated last
night that approximately 25 per
cent more persons will be eligible
to vote for a governor this year
than in 1930.
Official reports filed with Lane L.
Bonner, secretary of the state Dem
ocratic executive committee, show
ed an increase of t>5,031 in the
party enrollment in 36 of the 46
counties as compared with the
enrollment four years ago.
There were 268,795 names on the
books in 36 counties where 1930
enrollment in the same counties
numbered 213,764. The increase
was slightly over 25 per cent.
Purging of the club rolls was ex
pected to reduce the total, how
ever, and the actual vote hereto
fore has usually been considerably
less than the enrollment.
Only six of the 36 counties re
ported an enrollment exceeding the
ever sized registration rolled up in
1932 and but one of these was in
the upper state. There was no gov
ernor’s race in 1932.
Charleston and Barnwell in the
coast country, Sumter, Richland
and Fairfield in the central state
and Cherokee in the Piedmont
found their prospective voters
flocking to sign the books in great
er numbers than in 1932 or 1930.
Thirty-four of the counties sur
passed their 1930 enrollments,
however. The two exceptions were
Pickens, which fell 883 under its
mark of four years agp* and Mc
Cormick, which was four*short, A

Ford Demonstrations
Daily At World’s Fair
Seven and one-half minutes
down, thirteen up—a total of twen
ty and one-half minutes to disas
semble and then to assemble again
a 1934 Ford V-8 engine!
That’s the average time each of
the two teams of automobile me
chanics spend in such a demon
stration about twenty-four times
daily on a stage of the Ford Expo
sition Building at A Century of
Progress, Chicago, before throngs
of World’s Fair visitors. There’s
keen rivalry between these teams
—each one comprising two men—
and sometimes they’re even faster
than that, encouraged by the ap
plause of spectators who watch
their time on a clock on the stage.
But the average time is seven and
one-half minutes to dismantle and
thirteen minutes to assemble. Two
of the four men never worked on
motors before they began to prac
tice just a few weeks ago, but repe
tition has given them facility, cut
ting down their beginning time
from fifteen minutes in disassem
bly and twenty minutes in assem
bly. Of course, the demonstration
does not attempt to picture the
process as it takes place in a deal
er’s shop, but it does emphasize the
simplicity of construction of the
Ford V-8 engine.
It’s the simplicity of design, the
easy accessibility of every part of
I the engine that makes for speed in
breakdown and buildup, a speed
which reduces all repair costs for
the automobile ov/ner. In the
World’s Fair dismantling-assemb
ling demonstration, only the
standard kit of tools used in all
Ford service stations is employed.
Here is the disassembly process,
step by step. Two men, working
together, take off the valve cham
ber cover assembly at the top of
the engine, which serves the dual
purpose of manifold and valve
chamber cover and to which arc
attached the fuel pump, carburet
or, and generator. Then they re
move the cylinder heads.
Turning the mptor upside down,
the team takes off the oil pan and
pump. Then they stand the en
gine on end, flick out the valve as
semblies, and remove the connect
ing-rod caps, followed by the pis
ton and connecting-rod assemblies.
The distributor and cylinder front
cover are lifted off as a unit. Then
with the motor tilted to 45 de
grees, the push rods and crankshaft
bearing caps are removed.
Again turning the engine upside
down, the crankshaft is lifted out
and the camshaft removed. .This
completes the dismantling. To re
assemble the motor, the steps are
taken in reverse order.
Many are the items involved in
this saving of time but certainly
one of the most important is the
simple assembly of the valves.
Quickly assembled before insertion
into the cylinder block, they arc
instantly pushed into place as com
plete units. And when the valve
assembly retainer is removed, £
touch quickly releases the compo-
1 nent parts.
Thousands daily marvel at thb
demonstration of dexterity and
speed, but it is only one of many
compelling attractions of the huge
Ford Exposition, the largest single
exhibit at the World’s Fair.
