SOMEBODY BLUNDERED
Study of the statistics reveals
fhat a malority of the 756,500 auto
mobile accidents in the United
States in 1933 occurred on straight,
dry roads in clear weather, and in-
rolved cars in good condition driv
en bv persons with a year or more
#f experience. Over 75 p^r cent of
these drivers were persons of ma
ture age—from 25 to 64. The ma
jority of the 30,000 deaths and
$50,000 injuries must be attributed
to blunders.
A recent analysis by the National
Bureau of Casualty and Surety Un
derwriters shows what the blunders
were. There are eight in all.
1. Drove'too fast for conditions—
this accounted for approximately
ttiree-fourths of all mishaps in
1933 assigned to driving blunders.
2. Failed to slow down at inter
sections. r
3. Failed to keep to the right.
4. Tried to pass another car go
ing in the same direction when
view was obstructed.
5. Failed to slow down on ap
proaching pedestrians.
6. Passed on tjie right of a pre
ceding vehicle.
7. Ignored important traffic con-

If drivers will obey the eight
common-sense rules suggested by
these violations, the annual acci
dent record can be reduced to a
negligible figure. \
Two Chevrolet Sedans
Cover 2,225 Miles In
39 Hours, 54 Minutes
Detroit, July 3.—Seven Stockton,
Calif., Rotarians led by A. H. Pat
terson established new unofficial
records in their trip to the Inter
national Rotary convention at De
troit, it was reported to Chevrolet
officials here.
Making the journey in two Mas
ter Six Chevrolet sedans, the party
covered the 2225 miles from Stock-
ton to Chicago in 39 hours and 54
minutes, according to Patterson,
who drove the pace car. Woodruff
Patterson, his son, piloted the sec
ond car.
The first 1,047 miles of the jour
ney, from- Stockton to Rawlins,
Wyoming, was made in 19 hours
and 24 minutes, despite rain, snow,
wind, and cloudbursts from Battle
Mountain, Nevada, to Rawlins.
Stops were made only for gasoline.
In the entire journey from Stock-
ton to Detroit, only four quarts of
oil were added, two to each car, and
not a drop of water was added to
either. Patterson attributed his
unusually fast time to knee action,
stating that without this feature it
was very doubtful if the cars could
have negotiated the long grind
much of which was over unfavor
able roads and detours, at such
high speeds. At times the cars ran
for miles at speeds over 80 miles
per hour.

District Forester
Forsythe Transferred
District Forester H. Y. Forsythe,
who has been connected with the
State Forestry Commission for the
past four years with headquarters
at Aiken, has been transferred to
Florence, S. C., to be in charge of
the work in the Pee Dee Forest
District. The transfer of Mr. For
sythe is to be effective immediately.
During the time that Mr. For
sythe has been located in Aiken he
has had charge of the forestry
work in the counties of Aiken,
Edgefield, Fairfield, Greenwood,
Lexington, McCormick, Newberry,
Richland and Saluda. State Fores
ter H. A. Smith has announced chat
Mr. Forsythe’s successor will be ap
pointed within the next few weeks.
