Deubler, of the Con tinental Telephone Company, was a business visitor at the local ex change last week. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Huguley, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Morgan and son. Charles, and Mrs. C. H. Huguley spent last Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Huguley in Greenville. m n Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Dobey from Johnston visited Mrs. D. A. J. Bell Sunday. Misses Anna and Jenna McCas- lan of Troy were visitors in Mc Cormick Tuesday afternoon. Misses Eva Coleman and Lucille Caudle, students of Winthrop Col lege, Rock Hill, spent several days with homefolks here this week. Mrs. A. B. Lyon and Mrs. L. C. Branyon were guests of Mi’s. Ashby King of Greenwood Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Nabors of Abbeville were visitors here Tues- day. White-Dowtin Of interest to a great circle o r friends was the marriage of Mis- Sara Gladys White to Mr. Kennedy Dowtin, which occurred at the A R. P. manse Thursday evening February 16th, at 8:30 o’clock, thr Rev. Leon T. Pressly officiating Only relatives and a few close friends witnessed the ceremony. The bride was becomingly dress ed in beige silk, with shoes, hat, and other accessories of the same shade. Her outfit was completed by a dark blue spring coat which brought out the fashionable con trast of color. Immediately after the ceremony the couple left for a short wedding trip, after which they will make their home at the groom’s residence in the Dowtin section of the coun ty. Mrs. Dowtin is the accomplished daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. L. D. White of the Bethany section of this county. She received her education at Limestone College and later attended Osborne’s Business College in Augusta, Ga. For the past several years she held the position as stenographer for home and county agents here. Her lov able disposition has made for her a host of friends. Mr. Dowtin is an extensive land- owner in McCormick County and one of its most successful farmers Many friends join in extending best wishes to them. t Xt Baptist W. M. S. Holds Meeting Girls Auxiliary Has Valentine Party The Girls Auxiliary of the local Baptist church enjoyed a Valentine party Tuesday evening of last week at the home of Miss Anna Fur- queron on Augusta Avenue. The rooms where the young peo ple were received were bright with an arrangement of spring flowers. After a delightful round of games and stunts, the hostess served punch with ginger snaps. She was on her way here when the accident happened. Mr. and Mrs. Carl McBride and son. Billy, from Wadesboro, N. C., and Mr. and Mrs. H. Oxner from Anderson were visitors here Sun day at the home of Mr. Will Mc Bride. Mr. A. B. Lyon was a business visitor in Abbeville Monday. The Ann Carter Chapter, U. D. C., will meet at the home of Mrs. H. N. Coleman next Thursday af ternoon, March 2nd, at 3:30 o’clock. Mr. J. J. Collier of Plum Branch was a business visitor here Tuesday. He says he has about completed his new brick building on the lot next to the post office in Plum Branch and expects to open his general merchandise stoi’e about March 1st. -x- ! Birthday Dinner ! For Mrs. Bell The February meeting of the lo cal Baptist W. M. S. was held at the home of Mrs. D. V. Cason Mon day afternoon with twenty-one members attending. The meeting was opened with the song of the year, “Jesus Calls Us,” and Mrs. James Keown conducted the devo tional. An interesting program was given concerning Home Mission Work, with the following ladies taking part: Mrs. J. E. Britt, Mrs C. K. Epting, Mrs. W. M. Talbert, Mrs. J. S. Dukes, Mrs. W. J. Connor and Mrs. Bertha Harris. The presi dent, Mrs. G. C. Patterson, conduct ed a short business session after which there was a delightful svxdal half hour. IXi Rook Party Given By Mrs. J. S. Strom One of the prettiest parties given in McCormick this season was Tuesday afternoon of last week when Mrs. J. S. Strom entertained members of her Rook Club at her lovely home on Augusta avenue..' The living room and dining room, thrown ensuite, were attractive with an artistic arrangement of red and white spring flowers. Each guest found a pretty valentine which directed her to her place at one of the tables. At the conclusion of the game a delicious salad course, in a perfect valentine arrangement of red and white, with hot punch, was served by the hostess. Other than the club members, those enjoying Mrs. Strom’s hos pitality were: Mrs. C. H. Workman, Mrs. Wistar Harmon, Mrs. C. H. Huguley, Mrs. L. N. Brown, Mrs. W. N. Smith, Mrs. James Keown and Mrs. H. N. Coleman. x Workers Council Meet Methodist W. M. S. Holds Meeting The W. M. S. of the local Metho dist church met Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. J. S. Strom. The meeting was opened with the song “Work for the Night is Com ing.” Mrs. B. D. Mitchell conduct ed the devotional, and “Missionary News,” was read by Mrs. Jno. T. Fooshe. A most interesting play let entitled, “Mary Porter Home from College,” was dramatized by the following members: Mrs. A. J. Hendrix, Mrs. J. S. Strom, Mrs. B. D. Mitchell, Mrs. Jno. T. Fooshe, Mrs. J. B. Smith and Mrs. V/. N. Smith. A short business session was con ducted by the president, Mrs. D. W. Keller, and a delightful social half hour followed. Bell, with a six o’clock dinner Saturday evening at their home on Pine Street, the occasion being the honoree’s 70th birthday. The guests were received in the spacious living room whicli was tastefully decorated with spring flowers and ferns. The dining room was aglow with lighted tapers and the beautifully appointed table held a center ar rangement of johnquills and fern. Each guest’s place was marked by a dainty place card and a souvenir of this happy occasion. A three course turkey dinner was served to the following guests: Mrs. W. B. Quarles, Mrs. Louise Nelson, Mrs. Lula Wrenn, Mrs. Sarah Mattison, Mrs. W. G. Huguley, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Bell and son, James, Master Charles Morgan, of McCormick, and Mr. and Mrs. David Garrison, of Woodville. Mrs. Bell received many beauti ful and useful gifts to remind her of the high esteem in which she is held by her many friends. The regular monthly ^meeting of the Workers’ Council of the local Baptist Sunday School was held at the church Wednesday evening of last week immediately after the mid-week prayer service. Superin tendent G. J. Sanders, Jr., conduct ed an open discussion concerning the needs of the Sunday school, after which the meeting was*turn- ed over to Mrs. G. C. Patterson, chairman of the program commit tee. Mrs. J. S. Dukes gave a talk on “The Responsibility of the Tea cher,” and “Evangelism Through the Sunday school,” was the sub ject of a discussion by Dr. D. V. Cason, pastor of the church.
