bushel, which included rent of land,
seed, ferti'izer and manure, cultiva
tion, etc., compares favorably with
49. 45, and 37 cents per bushel in
1929, 1930, 1931, respectively.
Stressing the importance of hav
ing sufficient plants per acre for
maximum yields, Mr. Jeffords’ fig
ures show that narrower rows give
larger yields per acre. Figures for
four years, on this point reveal that
the average yield for those using
3 -1-2-foot rows was 65 bushels per
acre; 4-foot rows, 51.5 bushels; 4
1-2-foot rows, 46 bushels; 5-foot
rows, 46 bushels; 5 1-2-foot rows,
44.3 bushels; 6-foot rows, 38.2 bush
els.
In 1932 more demonstrators used
5-foot rows than any other width,
40 per cent of them making their
rows this width. Only five per
cent of them used 3 1-2-foot rows,
but 46 per cent used rows 4 to 4 1-2
feet wide, while only nine per cent
used rows 5 1-2 to 6 feet wide. The
average width of rows was 4 3-4
feet. The number of stalks in 100
feet cf row averaged 61, and the
number of ears in 100 feet of row
averaged 65, while the number of
cars in a 70-pound bushel averaged
156.
The results of these demonstra
tions, says Mr. Jeffords, are inter
esting as showing that good seed,
well selected land properly fertil
ized and prepared, proper spacing,
md good methods of cultivation
give a corn yield two to three times

The Greenville County Observer
remarks upon the large number of
weekly newspapers coming to its
•fflce that have only four or six
pages and very little advertising.
Many of these newspapers in for
mer days carried eight or ten pages,
half of which were filled with good
advertising that brought in the rev
enue on which a newspaper thrives.
As a rule, newspapers are optim
istic. They keep up a bold front
even when there is no silver lining
in the financial clouds. Seldom
does a newspaper tell the public of
its hardships and difficulties, but
there is no denying the fact that
newspapers have suffered and are
suffering from the depression.
Advertising is a newspaper’s main
source of revenue and the volume
mt advertising, both local and na
tional, has declined more than fifty
per cent in the last year or two.
The only way a newspaper can save
itself is to reduce its number of
pages. The cost of setting a page
advertisement is about one-feurth
the cost of setting a page of solid
type. The newspaper gets revenue
from the page of advertising, but
ihe. page cf solid type is an extra
frrc''" i ro, and therefore when ad
vertising decreases and solid type
must be set up at extra cost to fill
liic extra space the newspaper loses
froth ways. That is why newspa
pers have been forced to reduce the
number of pages from eight and
ten to four and six.
The newspaper must carry on
even if the revnue is not large
tnough to meet running expenses.
A. county could not do without a
newspaper. The law requires cer
tain legal notices to be published

jiiould happen to suspend publica-
tfcxi all the court and legal mach
inery of the county would come to
a standstill. In fact, the news
paper Is the county’s most import
ant public institution. Any other
institution in the county could,
to function with decidedly
inconvenience to the public.

financial storms since it set sail on

Tho x-ray is a product of the
present generation. When, in 1895,
Roentgen announced his discovery
of this new type of radiant energy,
capable of penetrating objects
opaque to ordinary light, the pos
sibilities of its value in medical
diagnosis immediately became ap
parent. As a reward for the tre
mendous amount of effort that fol
lowed the discovery, apparatus was
developed within the first year
which was capable of generating
rays of sufficient strength to pene-
t irate the heavier parts of the body
The rudimentary equipment avail
able to these early workers would
today be of interest only as museum
specimens, comparing to our mod
ern apparatus much in the same
manner as Edison’s first glowing
filament would to our modern elec
tric light bulb. There is no part of
the human body that cannot be
“x-rayed” within the fraction of
second today, while such heavy
parts as the skull required an hour
or longer during the early das'S.
From the foregoing it is seen
that the pioneer workers in this
field were using a feeble sort of. ray.
As a consequence of the lengthy
exposure required to compensate
for the lack of energy, together
with an utter ignorance of the phy
sical properties possessed by the
new agent, a tremendous amount of
damage was wrought to the skin of
those exposed. The operators shar
ed freely of these injuries which in
some instances were severe and
permanent. Yet these early mis
haps were necessary in order that
we might learn that the ray was
capable of producing other marvels
’than those concerning penetration
X-Jhfl today play a dual role in
the fight against disease. They are
daily employed in both the diag
nosis and treatment of countless
ailments. As regards the latter
they are frequently employed in
connection with radiation from the
rare element radium which emits a
similar form of energy.
In order that a disease might be
disclosed by an examination with
x-rays, it is essential that some or
ganic change be brought about in
the body by that disease. As an
example, the normal appearance of
the lurig is quite familiar to one ex
perienced in the interpretation of
x-ray films. When a disease such
'as pneumonia or tuberculosis in
vades these structures they are sure
to bring about changes in destiny
of some portions which immediate
ly become apparent on a film of
the part. In the case of pneumonia
there is more or less consolidation
or solidfication of the lung sub
stance which allows less of the ray
to penetrate than does the normal
softer parts. Such a condition
would reveal itself upon a sensitive
film by virtue of a lessening of the
effect of the ray at that point. On
the other hand if a tuberculosis
lung containing a cavity is examin
ed the opposite will be the case. On
account of the cavity offerng less
resistance than the surrounding
firm lung, there will be noticed an
area that is affected to a greater
extent by the ray. From this it
might be properly inferred that the
x-ray demonstrates differences in
density. Such being the case,
what of such organs as the stomach
and bowels which are hollow tubes
with comparatively thin walls? The
study of all such organs require
that they be filled with some opa
que substance prior to the examin
ation. In this way they can be
visualized or seen quite naturally,
the defect, if there be one, showing
its presence by a break in the in
ner surface of the wall. For the
demonstration of the various parts
of the body, as many different
methods are in use. It is some
times difficult for a patient to un
derstand why one x-ray film will
not give sufficient evidence re
garding all the structures in its
path. The answer is that for each
examination there is a special po
sition and preparation required,
and most likely one will largely
conflict with the other.
From the standpoint of treat
ment of disease x-rays and radium,
which are closely allied in their
biological effects, have much to
speak for themselves. In the first
place,, their greatest field of useful
ness lies in the control of certain
diseases for which little else can be
done. The mortality from cancer
has been materially lessened with
in the past few decades that these
two agents have been at our dis
posal. Previously we had only surg
ery to rely upon; if that failed, or if
the disease was located in a posi
tion that was inaccessible to surgi
cal attack, the fight was ended. To
day we know which cancer to treat
by irradiation and which to remove
by the knife. Some can be cured
equally as v/ell by one as by tho
other; some will yield with a great
er degree of satisfaction to on 3
than to the other, while still others
; are more successfully treated by a
combination of the two. A char
acteristic of the rays is that no
sensation attends their use.
Aside from the malignant discas-
eo, there are many ailments of a
less serious nature that respond
happily to this method of treat
ment. While not all of the skin
diseases are amenable to its use,
many are favorably influenced by
its action and there are some that
probably would not respond to any
other type of treatment.
Much might be said of the bene-

large number of diseases, but it
likewise must be seated that x-rays
are not a panacea for all human
fils. Its results are spectacular in
many of the conditions for which it
is advised, but the number of such
diseases does not include the small
part of those mentioned in a med
ical dictionary.

Transplant to open field cabbage
cauliflower, and lettuce plants and
onion seedlings.
Make plantings in the hotbed
February 1 to March 15 tomatoes,
using Earliana, Bonny Best, Great
er Balfcia^Stfef and for wilt-resist
ant, Break O’Day and Marglobe^
Transplant seedlings four inches
apart each way in hotbed as soon
as large enough, or to three-inch
pots. Transplant to open field as
soon as danger of frost is over.

Report Pecan Borers
Prevalent In State
CLEMSON COLLEGE, Feb. 4.-

unusually widespread this season
according to numerous inquiries re
ceived in recent weeks from a’
oarts of the state by A.lfred Lut-
ken, extension entomologist, wh •
suggests carbon disulphide as c
control measure.
The work of the borer can b
detected by the small pellets cl
wood at the base of the tree and
under the larger limbs. Carefn’
examination of the tree directly
above these pellets will reveal the
holes through which the casting
are pushed out. The holes are
about the size of an ordinary pen
cil and the inhabited tunnels are
closed with flaps of silk and bits
of wood.
The adult cossid is a grayish
moth with a wing spread of about
one and one-half inches. Eggs of
the moth are laid on the twigs dur
ing May and June and the larvae
tunnel out the pith of the small
branches. As the larvae grow’ too
large for the small branches, they
attack larger ones until by fall they
will be found in the trunk or the
main limbs. Transformation to
pupae takes place in April and the
moths emerge a few weeks later.
To control this insect, Mr. Lut-
ken says, locate all the holes and
into each one inject about one tea
spoonful of carbon disulphide by
means of a medicine dropper or
small oil can. Immediately plug
the holes tightly with putty or clay.
Best results will be obtained on
warm days, but the work should be
done before April when the trans
formation to pupae takes place.
