ANDERSON, Aug. 31.—Polling 8,-
135 votes more than the combined
totals of his two opponents, John
C. Taylor r Anderson county clerk of
court Tuesday , became the con
gressman-elect from the Third con
gressional district of South Caro
lina, defeating the incumbent, Fred
H. Dominick, of Newberry and D. A.
G. Ouzts of Greenwood.
Out of 56,777 votes cast in the
nine counties of the district on the
basis of unofficial totals, Mr. Tay
lor received 32,456 votes, Mr. Dom
inick received 18,664 and Mr. Ouzts
was third with 5,657.
COLUMBIA, Aug. 31.—Senator
E. D. Smith made a slight increase
in his margin over former Senator
Cole L. Blease for the nomination
as late returns were tabulated today
from yesterday’s primary.
The veteran senator, seeking his
fifth six-year term, gained a lead
of 6,100 over his former colleague
as unofficial returns were received
from all but 100 of the state’s 1,446
precincts. They will meet in a run
off primary September 13th.
With 1,348 precincts reported, the
vote stood:
Smith 92,491; Blease 74,806; Ash
ton H. Williams, prohibition repeal
advocate from Florence, 43,456;
Leon W. Harris, of Anderson, op
ponent of prohibition change, 38,-
036.
Solicitor’s Race
Solicitor T. C. Callison is said to
have a wide lead over McKendree
Barr for solicitor in the Eleventh
circuit, but the returns were incom
plete.

The vote is to be canvassed to
day. A recount is to be made in
the race for house of representa
tives and game warden. The vote
from several precincts was received
over the ’phone, and will be veri
fied from the poll lists today.
The vote on the magistrate’s race
in Parksville magisterial district
and Willington magisterial district
couldn’t be obtained in time to go
in the table.
