Small Grain For Hogs To Meet Corn Shortage CLEMSON COLLEGE, Aug 6.— Reminding us that the hog has been dubbed the mortgage-lifter of the West, and asserting that it justly deserves this name, Prof. L. I V. Starkey, chief animal husband man here, says that such a mort gage-lifter is badly needed in this country at the present time, and that we should give him every op portunity to assist us in paying off our mortgages. But hogs must eat, and just now we should be thinking about the small grain we are going td plant for winter grazing, says Mr. Star- key, suggesting that rye and barley are two of the most satisfactory hog grazing crops for South Caro lina. Since it requires more fer tile land for barley than for rye, if the land is rather poor rye will give better results. On the other hand, if the land is very fertile, bariey should give splendid results. This system of grazing on forage will save one-third of the grain neces sary to produce a given amount of pork and will consequently make the corn on hand go farther.
