D. A. G. Ouzts In
Race For Congress
The Greenwood Index-Journal of
Sunday says, Hon. D. A. G. Ouzts,
member of the house of represen
tatives from Greenwood county and
former state senator, announced
last night his candidacy for con
gress from the third district, com
posed of the counties of Oconee,
Pickens, Anderson, Abbeville, Mc
Cormick, Greenwood, Newberry,
Saluda and Edgefield.
Mr. Ouzts mailed his entrance fee
to J. Wilson Gibbes, treasurer of the
state executive committee, yester
day and he is now in the race with
Congressman Fred H. Dominick,
who has announced his candidacy
for re-election and John C. Taylor,
clerk of court of Anderson county,
who also announced last week.
It appeared unlikely last night
that there would be more than the
three candidates in the race since
Butler B. Hare, former representa
tive from the second district, stated
in Washington that he would not
be a candidate, having decided to
return to Saluda, reopen his lav/ of
fice and look after his farm. Mr.
Hare said the redistricting plan
adopted at the last session of the
South Carolina Legislature practi
cally eliminated him “for the pres
ent,” according to an Associated
Press dispatch from Washington.
He also was quoted as saying that
he would not be a candidate for the
United States Senate.
Mr. Ouzts led the ticket and was
elected to the house in the first
primary by a very large vote in
1930 and he also served the county
in the state senate from 1924 to
1928. He also led the ticket in this
county in his race for governor in
1926.
Mr. Ouzts is recognized as a
champion of strictest economy in
government.

Annual Farm Waste
Equals Paper Supply
Raw material enough to make
several times the quantity of paper,
as well as fiber board, acetic acid,
alcohols, acetone, and charcoal, re
quired by the country is produced
each year in the United States in
the straw of wheat, oats, barley,
rye, and rice, the stalks of corn
and sugar cane ,and the wild marsh
grasses, says the United States De
partment of Agriculture. These
farm wastes probably exceed 260,-
000,000 tons annually.
Although manufacturers know
that these farm wastes contain
enough raw materials to supply
mafny of the country’s needs, the
materials are usually so bulky and
the cost of gathering them is so
high that they cannot compete
with other more compact and more
easily handled materials. When
any are used, the demand takes on
ly a small part of the total supply.
Most of the products mentioned are
now made from other raw mater
ials, such as wood and corn.
'The department, through the
Bureau of Chemistry and Soils and
other branches, seeks constantly
to discover new, practical uses for
farm waste products. It recently
found that a cheap satisfactory
cellulose, base material for rayon,
could be obtained from bagasse, a
sugarcane waste.

Heavy Rains Over
County Past Week
Heavy rains over the county dur
ing the past week are causing some
damage to grain harvested and not
yet housed. Wind, lightning and
hail accompanied some of the
clouds. Lightning set fire to Mr.
S. H. Talbert’s barn in the Buffalo
community Friday evening about
7 o’clock, causing the loss of two
head of livestock, the barn and a
large quantity of corn, hay and
grain, while less than a mile-from
there hail practically destroyed the
crops on Mr. Calhoun Palmer s
place. Hail fell in several other
sections of the county, but no other
serious damage has been reported.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Prelimln-
ary estimates indicate below aver
age grain and fruit crops in South
Carolina this year.-Deficient mois
ture was the principal cause of low
grain yields, while cold March

generally responsible for the short
frifit crops.
WINTER WHEAT with a condit-
ioil of 65 per cent compares with 81
last year and a ten-year average of
77 per cent. The crop is estimated

cent below last year’s production
but about the average amount
made during the five years 1924-
1928.
The condition of OATS is report
ed at 65 per cent compared with 83-
last year and a ten-year average of
79 per cent. No official quantity
estimate will be made until July,
but it appears now that the crop
will be about 16 per cent below last
year’s production.

indicates a crop of 52,000 bushels
which is about a third less than last
year and 27 per cent below the
five-year average production.
PEACHES are reported as 42 per
cent of a full crop which compares
with 78 per cent last year and the
ten-year average of 63 per cent.
This condition indicates a total
crop of 880,000 bushels which is
about 50 per cent of last year’s rec
ord crop but only about 4 per cent
below the average production for
the years 1924-1928.
FARM LABOR supply is reported
as 62 per cent greater than the de
mand, which compares with 60 per
cant above demand last month and
34 per cent above demand a year
ago.

1 and the ten-year average, res
pectively, follows: TAME HAY,
66 and 77; WILD HAY. 64 and 76;
