April 10 was the sixtieth anni versary of the first observance of Arbor Day, which originated in Nebraska in 1872 and is now ob served more or less formally in every State in the Union and many foreign countries. April 22 is also the one hundredth annivers ary of the birth of J. Sterling Mor ton, who proposed the first ob servance and who served as Secre tary of Agriculture from 1893 to 1897. Because of difference in the favorable date for tree planting, the dates for Arbor Day vary widely. In 1899, before there was a For est Service in the Department of Agriculture, Gifford Pinchot, the Forester, commented that “the in stitution of Arbor Day may fairly be said to exercise immense influ ence in exciting affection and res pect for trees in the coming genera tions, and so to prepare a body of sentiment which will assist power fully hereafter to bring about the general practice of conservative forestry.” This prediction now seems con servative. The Forest Service is now more than 25 years old. For the last seven years the Clarke-Mc- Nary law has been in effect and has proved a material stimulus to tree planting, providing, as it does, for Federal co-operation with the States in the distribution of forest planting stock to farmers. In the last fiscal year the Federal contri bution for this purpose was approx imately $90,000, which was matched by nearly $250,000 by the States and by additional sums from private individuals. These two anniversaries, it is an ticipated, will increase interest in Arbor Day this year. Nurseries, private and public, have also ob served an increase in interest in tree planting this year as a part of the Washington bicentennial pro gram.
