Points that are being featured by Mr. McAlister and the county farm agents in these demonstrations are: (1) Proper location of top terrace, (2D Obtaining proper vertical distance between terraces, (3) Level and graded terraces, (4) Handling water from outlets, (5) ! Constructing bread-base terrace with two-mule turning plow equip ped with extension moldboard (ter racing wing), (6) Maintaining ter races, (7) Laying off rows between terraces, (8) Cultivating terraces. Reminding us that a fertile soil is the first requisite of a profitable agriculture, Mr. McAlister states that according to Farmers’ Bulle tin No. 1669, 21 times as much plant food is lost annually by eros ion as is removed by growing crops. This loss, he adds, has been going on for such a long period that thousands of acres are now worth less for farming purposes. The greatest erosion losses occur on land with steepest slopes. Many of these lands should have never been cleared and put in row crops. CLEMSON COLLEGE, Feb. 20.— Fifteen South Carolina vegetable gardeners have been awarded prin cipal prizes in the garden contest conducted in 1931 by the Exten sion Service, with $1000 in prize money donated by The State Com pany, Columbia, and others, for the encouragement of home and mar ket gardening. First, second, and third prizes of $100, $50, and $25 respectively were given in three classes—home gardens, small mar ket gardens, and larger market gardens. Prizes of $50, $25, and $15 were given in two other classes —tenant farmers and negro farm ers. The-* prize winners, as announced by A. E. Schilletter, extension horti culturist in charge of the contest, are as follows in the order named: Class 4, home gardeners: Mrs. Lottie O’Quinn, Walterboro; Lau- rine Cook, Antreville; Mrs. J. T. Dantzer, Elloree. Class 2, small market gardeners: Mrs. Norman L. Couch, Easley; Mrs. P. S. Stegal, Williqmston; Mrs. Douglas Edwards, Union. Class 3, larger market gardeners: Mrs. D. E. Griffin, Prosperity; J. A. Blackwell, Jr., Sumter; Mrs. Tal- madge Darby, Pelzer. Class 4, tenant gardeners: Mrs. C. O. Dorn, Oswego; Frances Phillips, Wellford; Mrs. Raymond Hill, Timmonsville. MARION, Feb. 27.—That quality farm products are always in de mand and properly handled will bring a satisfactory return even in periods of low prices is shown in the outcome of a sweet potato, project conducted in 1931 by W. R. Wells, Jr., county farm agent, and a group of Marion farmers. This group of sweet potato grow ers was assisted by Mr. Wells in sel ecting good seed stock of the prop er variety, treating before bedding, proper fertilizer and cultural meth ods, harvesting, grading and cur ing, tobacco barns being used for curing. Even though unfavorable weath er conditions resulted in minimum yields, satisfactory per acre re turns were secured and the grow ers have been able to market their potatoes at a premium over ord inary stock of which there were heavy supplies. These growers even found that their local mar kets would use quality potatoes at CLEMSON COLLEGE, Feb. 20.— J. O.
