Meet June 18-19 At Myrtle Beach Public Health in Time Of George Washington MYRTLE BEACH, June 8.—On AS COMPARED WITH THAT OF tfOU* fa OAftJ H* c a June 18th-19th the Lions of South Carolina will gather at Myrtle Beach, S. C., for their annual Dis trict Convention. Among the distinguished Lion visitors to be at the District Con vention at Myrtle Beach will be G. H. Hastings of Winston-Salem, N. C., a former Director of Lions In ternational. Mr. Hastings will rep resent the International organiza tion at the Convention. Lion Gov ernor P. L. Felder, Jr., of Orange burg, S. C., District Governor of the 32nd District, will act as Chair man of the Convention. Governor Felder has visited practcially every club in his District during the oast year and is acquainted with the in dividual club problems and the policies of his district as a whole. District Conventions represent ing approximately 2500 Lions clubs are being held prior to the Inter national Convention at Toronto, July 14-17 so that the agenda of the International Convention may be discussed and district policies formed. South Carolina, the 32nd District of Lions International, will also make final arrangements for attending the International Con vention as a unit. Although auto-caravans have been planned by the majority of the clubs throughout the 32nd Dis trict, many of the delegates from the more distant points will ar rive Myrtle Beach by rail. A program of unusual interest has been planned by the South Caro lina Convention Committee and everything is in readiness to en tertain a maximum number of Lion delegates and guests at the Myrtle Beach District Convention. ORANGEBURG, June 10.—With Walter Going, of Columbia, an nounced as the general chair man of all activities in connection with the annnual convention of the South Carolina Lions Interna tional to be held at Myrtle Beach, June 18th and 19th; plans are rapidly taking form for possibly the most enjoyable gathering of the Lions ever held in this State. At the headquarters of the Dis trict Governor, P. L. Felder, Jr., here, committee assignments have been 0 made, and notification given in order that the convention will click in true service club fashion when the delegates reach their ho tel at Myrtle Beach. District Secretary C. E. Summers announces that nearly a hundred reservations* have already been made for hotel accomodations, and others are reaching him daily. This Indicates that the attendance this year will be unusually large. ; District Governor Felder is now completing the program which will provide for two full days of enter tainment and profit for those who attend the convention. Despite the fact that more than a century has el apsed since the efficacy of small pox vaccination was " proved, uni versal vaccination is not yet prac ticed and the disease is still quite prevalent in this country, although less severe than formerly. ' : Measles seems at times to have raged very fatally in some of the colonial towns. In 1740 and 1741 Connecticut was swept by a severe epidemic of measles. In 1773 measles broke out in epidemic form in Philadelphia. A very malignant epidemic occurred in N$w York iri 1778. The type of measles which occurs now is quite ..mild as com pared with that period. Epidemics of influenza prevailed throughout the colonies at various times. In 1747 influenza raged over North America, and again in 1761. A characteristic descrip tion of the condition is" given by a physician of that time as follows: 4 It began w { th a severe pain in the head and limbs. A sensation of coldness, shivering, succeeded by r <reat heat, running at the nose and a troublesome cough. The recur- Com earworms are so common in this country that most farmers do not consider it worth while to make efforts to fight them, but tests conducted by the United Btates Department of Agriculture show that ears with long, tight husks suffer less than half as much injury as ears having short, loose husks. , Ears with long, tight husks are characteristic in some varieties, the department says, but there is enough variation in all varieties for a farmer to select for seed only ears with long, tight husks. In this way he can build up a strain having better husk characteristics. Long, tight husks are also good protection from other insect pests of com, such as the com weevil, in sections where com is stored in the husks. < This is an additional reason for, farmers to select their com in the field, where they can give proper consideration to the type of husk. x Peanuts make a good sandwich filling, if you put the roast shelled nuts through a coarse meat grind er, and then stir in enough cream to make the mixture easy to spread. X While our present public ?iealth activities, with the excep ;ion ol vaccination against smallpox and the use of quinine in the treat ment of malaria, belong almost wholly to the past fifty or sixty years, a comparison of the preval ance and reverity of disease and the state of the public health dur ing the lifetime of George Wash ington with such conditions of the present time is of interest. Such a study is particularly timely be cause of the arrangements being made by the United States George Washington Bicentennial Commis sion for the celebration of our First President’s two hundredth birthday in 1932. Historical records indicate that the principal obstacles which the early American colonists had to overcome were starvation, disease, and the Indians. These three things conspired to impose great 1 hardships upon the early settlers and constant hazards to life. In some instances entire settlements were wiped out by disease and starvation. Though school histor ies do not mention the fact, :‘t is on record that Jamestown was abandoned “because of epidemi- cals.” The more prevalent diseases in the Colonies were smallpox, scurvy, intestinal conditions—diar rheas, dysenteries—what is now recognized as typhoid fever. There were, of course, outbreaks of influ enza and colds; and tuberculosis was not unknown. Smallpox was one of the most fatal and most common diseases of the period. This disease was epidemic in Philadelphia in 1730, two years before the birth of Washington. Benjamin Franklin in his autobiography relates that in 1736f he lost a son, “a fine boy of four years old, by the smallpox.” He adds that “I long regretted him, and still regret that we had not given it to him by inoculation.” It was not until the latter part of the 18th century (1796) that Dr. Edward Jenner, an English physi cian, published his observations on the value of vaccination against smallpox and showed the world how the disease could be prevent ed. The practice of vaccination was first introduced into the Unit ed States by Dr. Benjamin Water- house, one of the early officers of the United States' Public Health Service (then called Marine Jlos- pital Service,) in Boston in 1800. He obtained some vaccine virus from England and vaccinated his own son, thus performing the operation in this country for the first time. Thomas Jefferson was greatly in terested in vaccination and en deavored to encourage its wide spread use.
