WASHINGTON, D. C., Sept. 9.—
Announcement today by officials of
the Highway Education Board in
dicated a prompt acceptance of in
vitations extended-to selected dele
gates to the Sixth International
Road Congress to participate in one
of three post-Congress tours that
win be held for the purpose of
studying at first hand highway
transport conditions in various
sections of the United States. The
Congress meets in Washington
October 6 to 11, and the tours fol
low immediately afterwards.
Invitations have been extended
to more than 300 of the leading
highway engineers and administra
tors of the world. Delegates from
more than sixty foreign govern
ments will be present at the Con
gress, and representatives of each
of these countries are expected to
be on one of the three tours which
the highway organization is spon
soring.
In an effort to show the visitors
from other lands highway condit
ions in latitudes relatively com
parable *to their own, the Board is
dividing the delegates into three
groups of approximately 100 each.
One of these will go east as far as
Boston, another will journey south
to Floiida, while the third will go
in a northwesterly direction as far
as Minneapolis and Des Moines.
The three tours will converge at
Detroit for a three or four days’
visit in this automobile manufac
turing district.
Invitations. are limited strictly
to delegates, non-resident in the
United States. The tours will last
approximately three weeks, during
which time the delegates will be
the guests of the Board and co
operating organisations, such as
automobile clubs, local chambers of
commerce and motor/trade organ
izations, for purposes of transpor
tation, subsistence and entertain
ment.
Norman C. Damon, who will be
in charge of the southern tour, has
left Washington for a last inspec
tion of the southern itinerary and
to make the final necessary ar
rangements. ^ He will confer with
officials of the several state high
way departments in the states
through which his tour will pass,
with chambers of commerce and
civic leaders everywhere.
The southern tour leaves Wash
ington Monday, October 13, by bus,
spending the first night at Natural
Bridge, Va., after 90 miles of travel
over improved highways in the lat
est type of automotive equipment.
The second day will find the party
at Winston-Salem, N. C., while oth
er points to be visited in North
Carolina include, Wilkesboro, Mor-
ganton, Asheville and Charlotte.
From Charlotte the party goes to
Charleston, S. C., and from Char
leston to Savannah, Georgia, to
continue their inspection of south
ern highways.
From Savannah the party will go
by bus to Tallahassee, Florida, and
in Florida will visit Ocala, Orlando,
Winter Haven, Tampa, Fort Myers
and Miami, as well as Palm Beach,
inspecting highways and traffic
conditions en route. They will en
train for Detroit Friday, October
24, from West Palm Beach, arriv
ing In the automobile metropolis
Sunday, October 26.
The delegates on the southern
tour will be accompanied by a staff
of interpreters, physicians, engin
eers, and journalists, as well as
several observers from the * De-
partmeht of State, Agriculture and
Commerce.
