“The Iodine State

THINGS PRACTICABLE WILL
BE DONE TO ADVERTISE THE
STATE’S IODINE PRODUCTS
AND THEIR VALUE
CHARLESTON, July 22.—To the
consternation of a few and the
wonderment of many, the metal
license plates issued to automobile
operators in South Carolina for the
year 1930 carried in perpendicular
lettering the word, “Iodine.” An
nouncement has just been made by
the State Highway Department
that the 1931 plates will bear the
words, “The Iodine State*”
“What • does it mean?”—“Why
Iodine-”—These questions repeat
edly have been asked the South
Carolinian who drives his car to
distant states.
The answer is in the wording on‘
the colorful little label, designed in
the shape Of the South Carolina
state map, which is now increas
ingly seen over the nation on ship
ments of fresh or canned fruits
and vegetables from this state.
“South Carolina fruits, vege
tables and milk naturally contain
sufficient iodine to provide for the
requirements of nutrition,” is the
way it reads. ... ^
The authoritative statement
from scjentific and medical sources
that “all animals require certain
amounts of iodine to prevent goit
er,” explains the importance of the
discovery x and of the announce
ment that South Carolina grown
products contain iodine, which in
proper quantities is a goiter pre-
/ventive and cure. Emphasis is
seen in the fusther statement that
there are thirty million persons in
the United States who have an
iodine dfeficiency and that two
. thirds of the states are in the iod
ine deficiency area.
Dr. William Weston, a promin
ent physician and baby specialist
of Columbia, the capital city of
South Carolina, is credited with
discovering and calling attention
to the mineral value in South Car
olina grown products, and ^ Gover
nor John ‘G. Richards, in his ex
ecutive capacity, is responsible for
the fostering and furthering of the
work which from month to month
is playing an increasingly prom
inent part in the development of
the knowledge of human nutrition.
^Observing in his practice that
goiter was exceedingly rare in
South Carolina and being familiar
with the relationship of iodine to
this malady Dr. Weston conceived
the idea oarly in 1923 that the
foods grown and consumed in
South Carolina mUst be responsible
5 or the absence of goiter in this
tate. The General Assembly of
the state discussed^ his theory and
finally decided to enact a law in
1927 providing for a commission to
study the mineral elements in
foods grown or produced in South
Carolina. Thus came into being
the South Carolina ^ood Research
Commission.
This o6mmission consists of Dr.
D. M. Douglas, President of the
University of South Carolina, Dr.
E. W. Sikes, President of Clemson
College, Dr. Robert Wilson, Dean
of the Medical Ootiege of the State
of South Carolina, Dr. J. A. Hayne,
Secretary of the State Board of
Health and two others, Dr. Weston,
who acts as chairman, and Dr. R.
R. Walker, Secretary, appointed by
-the Governor.

tablished its laboratory in affilia
tion with the State Medical College
at Charleston and under direction
of Dr. Roe E. Remington, who was
called from the University of Min
nesota to take charge of this im
portant work.
“Iodine is essential to the health
and normal development of every
Individual and we have determined
that foods grown or produced in
South Carolina contain a large
amount of iodine, iron, manganese
and a considerable trace of cop
per. Where these elements occur
in sufficient supply the blood is
rich and has a strong tendency to
withstand infection,” Dr. Weston
states.

in the food supply is essential to
the well-being of every individual
and if deficient there results en
largement of the thyroid gland in
the neck, lowering of mental and

existent.”
“We have learned that some
foods are more valuable than oth
ers in ygard to their content of
the necessary chemical elements,”
added Dr. Weston. /‘Among the
best are lettuce, spinach, cabbage,
carrots, beet* tops, turnip tops,
kale and broccoli.”
A rational program of goiter
prevention is the eating (daily) of
one root vegetable, one leafy vege
table and a potato, grown in a reg
ion where the supply of iodine has
been shown to be adequate.
From an historical standpoint,
goiter is one of the most ancient
and interesting diseases. Goiter
was a health problem in China
fifteen centuries before Christ and
it was then a custom among: the
Chinese to feed thyroid substances
from animals and the ash from
brunt sponges and other materials,
now known to contain iodine, in
the treatment of goiter.
Iodine first was discovered
making plans, in designing and
having built equipment and in the
selection of a director. After most
careful investigation Dr. Roe Rem
ington, Physiological Chemist and
Shelvin Fellow in Medicine at the
University of Minnesota, was secur
ed for this position.

needed to perform new tasks. A

though desirable, is not required
for attacking the problems of 1930,
but qualifications not requisite in •

receive new truth in these fields

but to apply it in our thinking and

in the natural sciences. Just as
the men of 1830 were opening up
the wilderness, were clearing away
the undergrowth of centuries and
making new crops where only wild
animals had- gone, so the century
which lies ahead of us should be
marked by the opening up of man’s
mind, the sweeping away of ideas
which have grown up more or less
hit and miss through the centuries
and of planting, well-established
fact where only unfounded pre
judice has existed, and the careful
nurture of the new crop until a
new civilization blossoms.”

To avoid having weeds is far
more important than it is to kill
them. A farmer can keep his
farm almost free of weeds if he
strictly observes three principles:
Prevent weeds from going to seed;
prevent weed seeds from being
brought to the farm; and in the
case of perennial weeds, prevent
them from making top growth, for
this will starve the underground
parts. For specific advice, write to

man of the editorial committee of
the American Journal of Public
Health, visited our laboratory re
cently and expressed the opinion
that we have found the solution of
the gravest health problem con
fronting the people of the United
States.
“Professor Alan Brown of the
University of Toronto, Canada, a
man of high scientific attainment,
also has studied our work and pub
licly praised it. He has made the
statement that Canada could be
saved by the consumption of
South Carolina grown vegetables.
Canada has a high goiter incid
ence.”
By act of the General Assembly
of South Carolina on March 1,
1929, the South Carolina Natural ,
Resources Commission was created
with Governor John G. Richards
as chairman, Dr. Weston as man
aging director and John K. Aull as
executive secretary. The purpose
of this commission is to co-ordin
ate the interest in and, for the
benefit of the nation, to further
the advancement and exploitation
of the iodine and other mineral
and natural resources of South
Carolina.
