Little Talk On Thrift
THRIFT TO BE BENEFICIAL
MUST BE PRACTICED VOLUN
TARILY—NOT UNDER
COERCION
(By S. W. Straus, President Ameri
can Society for Thrift.)
The practices of thrift should be
undertaken voluntarily. Seldom
if ever is good accomplished when
efforts are made to compel others
to be thrifty. The only approach
to thrift is educational. Those who
are to profit by adherance to this
simple virtue must first be con
vinced in their own minds that it
is essential to their welfare and
progress. -
There are many devices now be^
ing made use of to encourage
thrift. Where these are inspira
tional they will bring results. But
no good will come of efforts to
force habits of thrift upon others.

Although the plan was origin
ated with the best of motives, it
proved unsuccessful. The apparent
paternalistic attitude was resented
by the rank and file of the organ

Even in school savings bank

provoked when efforts are made to

The practices of thrift include
