Job, “the bird- man,” as the schools of South Caro’ina call Mr. Job of the State Department of Education, Harv ard graduate, author, national lec turer, photographer of wild life, is trying to decide. Last year he de clined a better offer and stayed here. Now again further oppor tunities a«e opening. He has been asked to give a few facts and a little history, and in answer to re quests has furnished the following information: For the past decade public in struction in natural conservation has been furnished to South Caro lina mainly through the benevol ence by the National Association of Audubon Societies and certain private donors, especially Mrs. C. Oliver Iselin, of Aiken and New York. To conduct this work Mr. Job was first sent here in 1924. Hon. James H. Hope, State Super intendent of Education, recognized the value and success of this work and Mr. Job was added to the State Department of Education, begin ning October T, 1926, where he still serves. That month an illus trated article in The American Magazine about his life and work attracted wide interest. Soon after this the State Bud get system was introduced here, and his new work was not on the budget. The County Superintend ents were by law receiving appro priation “for school purposes” from the game funds. About half of them, at one time or another, con tributed five per cent of these re ceipts as a proper and effective way to protect game and wild life resources. This latter method never raised more than $1,500 in a year from South Carolina. So others joined with the above backers to assist. These were mostly owners of es tates and hunting preserves in South Carolina. Among these may be mentioned Coulter D. Huyler, of ! Huyler chocolate fame, owner of Dewees Island; Gayer G. Dom inick, New York banker, owner of Bull’s Island; the Santee Club, the Okeetee Club, and others. Some of these have previously contributed large amounts to the South Caro lina game department. These are all large tax payers in South Car olina, and feel that they h,ave. a right to be heard on this subject. The year following the official beginning of conservation instruc tion in the schools of South Car olina, a clause was placed in the middle of a bill, making it option al whether or not game. funds should be used for educational pur poses. Naturally conservation edu cation thereafter received very lit tle support from public funds.* This became so humiliating that Mr. Job wrote to all County Superin tendents of Education thanking them and absolving them from further contributions, stating that charity would assume the task of raising necessary funds for 1929- 30. Much more might be told. But the following facts stand out: (1) That the State of South Carolina has introduced public in struction in natural conservation and care of natural resources. (2) To make this possible, the State has provided no funds what ever, but depends solely upon charity to maintain this, as it has for about ten years past. We lag behind while various other States are pressing forward with big con servation programs. (3) South Carolina is spending money, and properly, to advertise its resources. Yet, unless we pro vide for this, we shall shortly lose our conservation education pro gram here. Would it not be a wise invest ment for us to find out what is needed, and put into effect with moderate expense, the up-to-date educational program, as follows: (1) Maintain the program of popular public instruction in nat ural conservation, in schools and for the general public. This would mean educational co-operation with other State departments, and would include such lines as wild Analyze the Allowance on Your ' ‘ 1 ; # Used Car If a deafer pays you mow than the true worth of the ear he must mahe up the difference by extra charyes on the new ear or re-sell \ it to some one else at too hiyh a price P ERMANENT value is always better than a tem porary bargain in the purchase of an automo bile. It pays to look ahead and consider reliability and ultimate up-keep costs, as well as comfort, safety, speed, and beauty of line and color. Since most automobiles are bought for replace ment, the value set on your used car is a factor in \ # # # almost every purchase. Frequently it is given an importance beyond its true worth. Used cars have a definite market value and you are justly entitled to an allowance based on that value. It is not fair that you receive less. It is not to your best interests to receive more. If a dealer pays you more than the true worth of the car he must either re-sell it to some one else at too high a price or make up the difference on the new car. This he cannot do unless he is allowed an excessive profit on the car or on financing, extra equipment and other charges. In either case, you pay the bill, for no way has yet been found to give something for nothing. The money must come from somewhere. You may not get the largest used-car allowance from the Ford dealer, but that very fact should give you confidence that you are receiving full value in the new car. Ford charges are not marked up or increased to cover a high trade-in alloivance on your old car. Because there is no waste, extravagance or undue profit in manufacturing ? distribution or selling, every dollar you pay for a Ford brings a full dollar in return. In lower first cost, in reliability and long life, in the low cost of operation, service and replacement parts, the Ford will save you much more than the seeming difference in trade allowance. FURTHERMORE, at least $75 extra value is given to you in the new Ford in the Triplex shatter-proof glass windshield, the Rustless Steel, the five steel- spoke wheels, and the four HoudaiUe hydraulic double-acting shock absorbers. The unusually large number of ball and roller bearings, and the extensive use of fine steel forgings instead of castings or stampings, are other features that show the extra quality built into the Ford car. (2) Use all practicable means of instruction. The press is most co-operative. We have now the best of lantern-slides, motion and other pictures, approved courses prepared, text-books in prepara tion, and presently could give pub lic instruction by radio. (3) Make this work and its fu ture so thoroughly assured and supported that its director can really be a citizen here and not have to wonder each year whether or not there will be funds to re sume work! Is it unreasonable to expect this sort of enlightened, educated, pro gressive program? If we are not yet sufficiently advanced for it in South Carolina, we are told that the National Audubon Societies' will put Mr. Job in another state, where real opportunity for large public service will be waiting. Lead Arsenate Protects Lawn From Garden Beetle Lead arsenate has been found to be an effective poison for use against the oriental garden beetle, an insect which causes severe damage to lawns in the Middle Atlantic States. Directions for treating lawns with this material are given by Harold G. Hallock of the United States Department of Agriculture. When the soil is being prepared for a new lawn, acid lead arsen ate should be broadcast uniform ly at the rate of 3 1-3 pounds for 100 square feet of ground. To get a uniform distribution of the lead arsenate it may be mixed with two or three times its bulk of moist but not wet soil. The ground should then be cultivated, or raked so as to work the poison in to a depth of 3 or 4 inches. Such a treatment is effective for four or t five years. ^ In old lawns, where the turf has been attacked but not killed by the grubs, the arsenical may be applied as a top dressing at the rate of one-half pound to each_ 100 square feet of lawn. Thq.poison’ should be mixed with fifteen times its weight of good top sdll. This mixture should be broadcast at the rate of 7 1-2 pounds to each 100 square feet of ground. This treat ment should be given once each year for three years. The treatments may be applied at any time from the first of April to the last of October, when the ground is not frozen. Mowing, watering, and other customary operations may be continued as usual. In some instances plants are severely attacked by adult beetles. When this happens they should be sprayed with 3 pounds of lead ar senate and 2 pounds of wheat flour to 50 gallons of water. This solution has proved satisfactory in experiments conducted by the De partment of Agriculture. txx Treating Smut in Oats Smut in oats causes large annual losses, yet this disease is easily and cheaply controlled by treating the seed with formaldehyde, applied as a spray, sprinkle, or dip. What ever method is used, one pint of formaldehyde properly diluted will treat 50 bushels of oats. Seed should be cleaned thoroughly and graded before it is treated. Sur plus seed treated with formalde hyde may be fed to livestock with out injury, provided the grain is first spread out and thoroughly aired for several days. If bags and sacks have been used for smutty oats, they should be soaked in a formaldehyde solution or sprayed with it before treated seed is put in them. Contaminated drills also should be disinfected. Formalde hyde is irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat and must be handled • with care. —txt- Moist Storage for Eggs Until lately it was believed that eggs should be stored under very dry conditions, to prevent mold growth on the shells, but recent investigations by the U. S. Depart ment of Agriculture shew that too low humidity in storage rooms harms the eggs. Probably a hum idity of from 82 to 85 per cent is best—as high as possible but just below thfe point at which moM growth forms. Some warehovsmen who formerly used calcium chro- ride or some other moisture-ab sorbing medium have abandoned this practice and now place pahs | of water in storage rooms to in- i crease the humidity.
