It is a Scriptural saying*, that, “An honest man is the noblest work of God,” and it is no less true that this is fully exemplified in the life of Thos. L. Faulkner, an aged veteran, whose spirit took its flight, on Mon day morning, November 26th, when he passed away as peacefully and as quietly as he had lived while on earth. In early manhood he vc- unteered and entered the service of the Con federacy, enl’sting in Company K. 14th S. C. Reg., Capt. Byrd com manding the Company and Col. Des sau, the regiment. While I was not ;n the same branch cf service, as Mr. Faulkner, I’ve learned fyom comrades who fought shoulder to shoulder with him that he was heroic and fearless. Following with his company, the Southern cross under Lee and Jack- son, through four years cf summer’s heat and winter’s snow, he served faithfully and uncomplainingly until car flag went down upon the fatal field of Appomattox. He was pres ent, when Lee, with tears in his eyes, ordered his men to fight no more, and he, with others wheso cheeks wfere wet with tears, turned his face homeward, there to engage in the pursuit of agriculture, and entered into it with the same zest., ambition and energy with which he had served his country. In . the days of recon struction he proved himself faithful again, in helping to restore this gov ernment back into the hands of the white people. WUhal, he labored faithfully in bringing up a family of boys and girls in the nurture and admonition of the Lo.-d, who today, are an hon or and a credit to h's memory, and a blessing to the communities in which they five. During his illness of mere than a yea:*, he manifested the same heroic spirit in battling with d sease that he had exhibited upon the battle fields of Virginia. During all this time he was aliectionally and tend erly cared for by his noble children whose delight it was te make him ccoiifortable and happy. While he may not have amassed a great fortune, to leave to his chil dren, he has bequeathed to them in the ferm of 'a good name and char acter, a legacy, which according to Biblical history, “Is father to be chosen than great riches.” I want to say that the genei:atic-i that made up the rank and file of the Confederate army has never been reproduced, nor surpassed by any army that ever gave battle upon God’s gieen earth, in he.'o sm, forti tude cr bravery. Speaking cf battles—in the langu age cf the poet: “The greatest battle that was ever fought, Will you tell me where and when ? The map of the wc-eld contains it not, It was fought by the mothers of men.” The descendants of such fathers and mothers as these, should feel prouder of their ancestry than if they could trace their lineage with out one unbroken line, back to that of the proudest captain that ever ccme back victoriously threugh the Appian Way to Rome, shouting hosannas to Caesar. ... The passing this noble veteran, Thos. L. Faulkner, leaves only six old Confederate veterans that the thin gray line is being rapidly ie- duced, and ere long, the last one of us will, in the language of that knightly and saintly Stonewall Jack- son, have “Passed over the river to rest under the shade cf the trees,” until the Arch Angel shall sound the final reveille to summons us to dress parade upon the eternal plain where there will be no more wars, and no more parting. Treasureris Notice The County Treasurer's Office wilT be open for the purpose of receiving taxes from the 15th day Of October^ 1928, to the 15th day of March, 1929. AH taxes shall be due and payable between the 15th day of October* 1928, and December 31, 1928. That when taxes charged shall not be paid by December 31, 1928, the County Auditor shall proceed to add a penalty of one per cent for Janu ary, and if taxes are not paid on or befoUe February 1, 1929, the County Aud tor will proceed to add Two Per Cent and Five Per Cent from the 1st of Mai’ch to the 15th of March, after which time unpaid taxes will be col lected by the Tax Collector.
