No State in the union has been more highly favored with soil and climatic conditions for growing t'mber than has this state. Originally the state contained ap proximately 19 million acres of al most unbroken forest of magnificent trees of the most valuable timber species. In a comparatively few yearn this great body of timber has been cut and util'zed in our indus trial pursuits in this and other states and today there remains not more than one-half million aci*es of virgin forestr. and lumber men predict that this small acreage will be cut in less than 15 years. Many industries of the •. tate are depending upon the timber resource cf this state for their existence Mrmy cf the wcod usirg plants must move cut unless a timber supply is available for their continuance. One large company that has given cm ployment to an army of employees for many years see", th'' end of its cut within five years and with its i'e moval gees the small town maintain ed by the lumber operations. A re Auction in our t’mber supply means tha' thousands of persons now em ployed by lumber companies and wood using plants all dver the state must leave the state to follow their vocation, and it will not be many years until the supply in other states is rlso used up. This state is capable c** growing all the wood necessary for her con tinued prosperity, and much for oth er states as well. The lumber indus try has done a lot for the progress of the state and will continue to do so if we permit nature to have her c-.vn way. Why do we continue to burn our forests when there is no construc tive reason for so doing? Forest fires may destroy a few boll weevil and burn up a few snakes, but the k«ss to the citizens of the state in the destruciton of the young trees that nature in her wisdom piovides for future generations is appalling when their monetary value is known. Every citizen of the state has a perfect right to do with his timberland what seems best to him but we are sadly 'n 4.he wrong when we permit our fires to spread to our neighbor’s land and cause damage to his ciop o? tim ber. Th? State Forestry Commission urges extreme care with f re in the | woods. Help keep our forest lands productive. C such a characterization is intended as miticism or compliment, the fact re mains that the power of concentra- tic-.i is a valuable possession. Noth’ng worth while was ever ac complished without, concentrated ef fort. This rule applies with spec ial force in the administration of one’s personal affairs. Those who scatter their efforts and give their time to all sc 4 rts of activities and en terprises are not apt tc» gain satis factory results. Observation in any community will show that those who are succeeding best in life are to a great extent men of single purpose. A study of the careers of the successful men of this or any other country will bear testimony to the same t:uth. This dcos not mean that there is any virtue in selfshness or in a nar row attitude toward life. Successful non keep themselves in a receptive mood to changing conditions in ord- jr that they may rot get out of step vith the marching feet of bregress. But it is lack cf thrift—a sheer vaste cf t’me. efforJ opprotunPv and money—not to have one out standing purpose or plan in life and bend every effort accordingly. It is always better to do one thing well than to do many things pocoly.
