Aug. 25.—Man fail ure was blamed today for the wreck in which a crowded subway express train was torn asunder under Times Square yesterday, killing 15 persons and injuring more than 100. A defective switch, hastily impair ed, was at first g:ve n as the cause of the disaster, and William Baldwin, the maintenance man who made the repairs, was held in $10,000 ba : l on a charge of homicide. At the end of a day of long in- vestigaticn, however, the transit com pany commission announced that the derailment was not caused by the repaired switch but by another nor mally operated from the same cir cuit. This switch it was said, was apparently turned as the train crowd ed with almost 2,000 homegoers, was passing oven it, and it was turned not by the train itself but appar ently either from the Times Square signal tower or from switch valves close by the track. The ten-car steel express had been held five minutes at Times Square during repairs and clearing the track and as soon as the down t^ack was cleired Baldwin signaled the motor- man of the waiting train to proceed. The f rst eight cars passed the switch but the second truck of the ninth car ran onto an open switch and shot sideways into a concrete wall separating the uptown and the downtown tracks. It was cut into by the impact, its rear half being tel escoped by the rear car and its front being dragged over the ties for 100 feet until both it and the eighth car overturned. Mer v women and children, dead and alive, were strewn along the tracks; the light went out and panic seized the passengers as smoke from smoul dering fires caused by short circuits rolled through the cars. *•- Twenty-four hours after the -wreck 25 persons were still in hospitals. It was believed the death list might eas ily mount above 20. In an interview shortly after the transit commission had made its re port, Mayor Walker, who took an ac tive part in the early investigating, navealed that the investigators were considering the actions of andther employee besides Baldwin. He did not mention this man by name but said he was alleged to have helped Baldwin throw the handle controlling the switches.
