Variety in texture makes the
meals more appetizing. Have one
food with a crisp crust, like corn
fritters or scalloped tomatoes, an
other with a sauce and a third simply
cooked in water and seasoned with
melted butter. A raw vegetable, like
celery or radishes lends still fuith-

An old-fashioned remedy for a
stain made by tar, axle grease, road
oil. creoscte oil, asphalt or asphalt
paint, is to rub lard thoroughly into
the stain, and then wash it with hot
water and soap. The treatment may
have to be repeated. Otherwise one
of the solvents, such as caibon tet
rachloride, chloroform, turpentine
or benzol may be used.

It may surprise many people to
learn that the cockroach har, one
redeeming trait. Accordirg to en
tomologists cf the United States De
partment of Agriculture, this com
■ mon and offensive house pest will
prey on that other disgusting insect,
the bedbug.
It is not recommended, however,
that cockroaches- be kept for eradict-
ing the bedbug. There are other
more approved methods for exterm
inating that insect.
The nuisance of reaches in offices
and in living roevns of houses can be
reduced, :'f not removed entirely, by
elimination of all attractive sub
stances, according to Farmers’ Bull
etin 658-F, “Cockroaches.” If care
is taken to keep food from living
rooms, offices, desk drawers, and no
attractive odors of fcod are permit-
tod to remain, the roach nuisance
can be restricted largely to places
where it is necessary for food to be
kept. In such places the .storage of
feed mater al in insect-proof contain
ers or in ice boxeg. together with
thcU’ough-going cleanliness, will go a
long way toward preventing serious
annoyance.
Roaches may be controlled by the
use of poisons and repellents, fumi
gants, and traps. One of the most
effective and simple means of rid
ding premises of the pests is by the
use of commercial sodium fluoride,
a powder easily obtainable. It may
be used in the pure form or diluted
one-half with some inert substance
such as powdered gypsum or flour.
\Y]ith a dust gun or blower the sod
ium fluoride can be thoroughly dust
ed about the runaways and hiding
places of the reaches. The immed
iate effect is to cause these insects
to rush out of their hid ng places and
run about more or less blindly, show
ing evidence of discomfort, to be
followed in the course of a few hours
by their death. The dust acts both
as a stomach person and as a contact
poison.

Making Big Strides
For New Record

DETROIT, July 14—Positive In
dication that the Chevrolet Motor
Company in 1928 will again establish
a new annual production record and
go vycII beyond the million mark this
year, was seen in an, announcement
here today my W. S. Knudsen, pres
ident, that output for the first six
months of the year totalled 751,536
cars and trucks, as compared with
607,749 for thv> corresponding period
of 1927.
Responding to the greatest demand
in its history, Chevrolet establish
ed new mdnthly production records
every month this year. Like the five
preceding months, June was the best
sixth month in the history of the
company with a total of 132,794 un
its, as compared with 112,794 'for
June of 1927.
With its fourteen great factories
at the peak of efficiency and precis
ion operation. Chevrolet in the last
six months produced a fin-'shed car
eve:y five secchds of each working
day. Daily production over the six
months period averaged 5,315 units.
All dally records were broken May
28 when 7,075 f.nished and trucks
were built.
In addition to the 751.536 cars and
trucks built s nee the first of the
year, 32 719 of the “Bigger and Bet
ter” models that have since won na
tion wide acclaim, were built in De
cember bring.ng the total number of
the present model built up to July
1st to 784.355.
Productlc'.r in the first six months
of the year exceeded the total out
put for the year of 1926 ‘ and nearly
doubled the product'on of each pre
ceding year. .
Due to the steadily increasing pop
ularity of the “Bigger and Better”
car, production will continue at a
high rate throughout the summer
and fall. Mr. Knudsen announced.
Schedules set for July, August and
September call fer more than 100,-
000 units each month, indicating that
Chevrolet will reach the mill'on mark
before October first.
One of the factors that made pos
sible this record breaking production
achievement was the open ng of the
mammoth assembly plant in Atlanta
early this spring, providing Chevio-
iet with facil ties for the production
of 350 more units da’ly.
Early in the fall another mam
moth assembly plant will be opened
in Kansas City, increasing again by
350 units daily Chevrolet’s produc
tion capacity. With the complct on
of the Kansas City project, Chevro
let will Have an annual production
capacity of more than 1,250.000 cars
and trucks annually.

crease of 29 per cent of such exports
during the year. Evidently Yankee
inventions are in high favor in the
Old World, as our out-going ships
