A small group of colon ists, lovers of liberty, of democracy, of human rights, determined to j wrest those rights from England or j ^ive their all n the attempt. It requ red unselfish courage to arrive at that determination, sacrifices rcely given to carry it through. All are familiar with the manner in which these were made and the vic tory that was won. Yet this was but the beginning. Many’ problems confronted the young nation,, countless difficulties had to be surmounted. From that small group of colonies there sprung one of the most prosperous and powerful countries of the world. It is with pride and satisfaction that one is known as a citizen of the United States of America—a coun try that is known throughout the world as a land of freedom, equality and democracy. And in return for the many privileges afforded by such a citizenship everyone should undertake to petoform efficiently and conscientiously the duties and res ponsibilities involved and take an in terest in public and national affairs. There are still many questions of vital importance to be decided and it is up to the people as a whole to see that these are handled wisely. For instance, it must be decided to what extent the policy of restrictive immigration will be czftried, the best method of education, the administra tion of justice, the election of public 'flicials, and others of 1-ke nature. During the f.rst years of the : cun try's existence many were need ed to till the so 1 and develop the re sources. There were practically no restrictions upon immigration and they came from every land in large lumbers. Naturally, the population nercased swiftly. The people be- :ame amalgamated and there cTigi- nated a distinct’ve American race. In thc last two decades it has become apparent that unless measures were taker the country would be quickly over populated and the basic stock of America obliterated by aliens. Meas ures were taken to reduce the in coming number resulting at last in ’ho passage of the restrict.ve immi grat’on act of 1924. This limited the number to be admitted each year to about 160,000 and included also a rational Origins clause the purpose cc which was to apportion the quota of each country accoiding to the basic stock in the United States. It is been decided a practical and casible plan by those appointed tc make invest’gation but yet its on ictmert has been delayed from year o y^ar. With millions of ycuth to edu :ate the public schco’s have become of the country’s largest and mo^t important industries—an in dustry the product of which is men; -he r qualities dependent to a large xteni upon the efficiency w’th which the industry functions. The construction of the buildings, the right type ocf teacher and many ^uestic-ns : Relative to the schools are ■f vast importance to the nation. Yet there is no Department of Educa tion, no direct representative of these millions of prospective citizens in the President’s Cabinet. A bill providing for this has been before Congress for several sessions yet has never been reported dut of commit tee desp’te indication that it would pass if reported. Why? The courts are behind, the jails aye filled, those committing crimes are held in waiting months before being brought to justice. Often those most deserving of punishment are al lowed to go free or escape with only a minimum fine. Crime is apparent ly on the increase. It is for the peo ple to search out the reason for this and correct the evil. Then finally, a duty of primary importance to every citizen is the intelligent use of h’s right of fran chise. Since public officials are xcted by the people, and the wel fare of the nation is largely depend ent upon those officials, it is neces sary that the people net neglect this duty and make sure that the best qualified are elected. Th:s can be accempl’shed only if a large major ity, and not a minority, cast their votes after a careful study of each candidate’s qualifications. There are many other reasons why every citizen should be awake to his responsibilities, display patriotism in peace as well as in war, ndt think of love for the country and allegiance to it only on the Fourth but every day of the year. Let the consistent devotion and patriotism of every in dividual of the nation form a great ion will conduct its regular confer ence for workers, will hold study classes., have addresses from return ed missionaries and other prominent leaders. The Sunbeam Camp for children between six and twelve years of age will be in connection with this work. A large number of the Bapt’st women and children gather for this week of study and recreation. The management of the assembly is announcing a school for preachers 1 during the first days of the coming session. This will be a new feature and should prove very popular with many of the ministers over the state. A very strong faculty has been se cured and many of the most success ful pastors and prominent seminary professors cf the denominat’on will be heard. A number of the churches will send their pastors to this school in order that they may receive the help and inspiration fi’om such a course. The secord week cf the assembly will feature three distinct events. The Sunday School convention for the state will be in session July 24, 25, and 26. Major G. H. Mahon ci Greeav lie is president of this body, and a number of experts in Sunday School work will appear on the pro gram. The State B. Y. P. U. con vention begins on the 27th and closes on the 29th. Mrs. J. M. Dawson of Wacc, Texas, will be the noon day speaker fo;' these days. Mrs. Daw son is knov/n as the “woman orater of Texas” and has been on the as sembly program for several years. Hundreds of young people now look forward to her inspiring messages at the convention. During this same week there will be a chautauquz number each evening and these have always p.oven popular* with the Greer v’He people as well as the out- of-town delegates at the assembly The program this year will cons.s' of a number of travelogues given bj recent travelers in the Holy Lane and in the orient. The best form in which to buy the hellebore for this purpose is as a powder. Add 1-2 pound to every 10 gallons of water, stir it, and then allow it to stand 24 hours before us ing. Ten gallons of the mixture should be appl’ed to every 10 cubic feet of manure. This treatment will destroy all but a very small per centage of the fly larvae. The com position and lotting of the manure is not interfered with by the helle bore and there is apparently no in jury to field crops fertilized with the treated manure.
