CLEMSON COLLEGE, June 1.—It is impossible for a dairy farmer to guess satisfactorily at wh’ch are his profitable and unprofitable cows. That is the first of five good and sufficient reasons justifying keep ing a dairy milk record of each cow in the herd, according to Prof. J. P. LaMaster, chief of the dairy division, for these milk records give the basis for determining the profitable and unprofitable cows in a herd. Most ow. crs think of their good cows as being those that milk best when they are fresh, but the weights of milk are often quite different from the estimates made from a pail of fresh milk which carries the foam. The other four reasons: 2. A cow needs feed in propoition to her size, age, amount of milk given and the test of the milk. With out knowing definitely the amount of milk that the cow gives it is ab solutely impossible to feed hor in proportion to her produefon needs with any degree of intelligence. 3. Keeping daily milk records af fords opportynity to detect sickness before it becomei so aggravated that it is noticed in the animal. A cow usually starts go ng off feed a day of two before she quits eating, and this is reflected in her milk weights, giving the farmer a chance to treat the cow properly and prevent serious sickness and loss of profit. 4. Keeping milk records gives op portunity to check up on the work of the milker. Some milkers fail to strip cows dry 1 ; others lack the knack of milking thorcfaghlv and rapidly. All these conditions reflect in the amount of milk secured from the cow. 5. Milk records lend interest to a task which because of its nature is rather monotonous and uninteresting. It creates competition among milkers and helps to stimulate an effort to hold the cow up in milk when the natural tendency is to dry. XXX “Shall I buy a combine.” is the question discussed in a recent bulle tin of that title issued for free dis tribution by the U. S. Department of Agriculture as Farmers’ Bulletin 1565-F. The combine, or combined haivester-thresher, is of particular interest to the farmer who harvests 100 acres or more annually. The bulletin discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the combine and describes its success for vari ous crops. X It might be said that even a good speller has his bad spells.
