Industry for twenty years and it is used today by more people
than any other automobile. More than eight million Model
T Fords are in active service in city, town and country, and
many of them can be driven for two, three and five years and
even longer at very small up-keep expense.
The cost of Model T parts and of necessary labor is
unusually low because of established Ford policies.
New fenders, for instance, cost from $3.50 to $5 each,
wfth a labor charge of $1 to $2.50. Tuning up the motor
and replacing commutator case, brush and vibrator points
costs only $1, with a small charge for material. Brake shoes
can be installed and emergency brakes equalized for a labor
charge of only $1.25. A labor charge of $4 to $5 will cover
the overhauling of the front axle, rebushing springs and spring
perches, and straightening, aligning and adjusting wheels.
The labor charge for overhauling the average rear axle
runs from $5.75 to $7. Grinding valves and cleaning carbon
can be done for $3 to $4.
A set of four new pistons costs only $7. For a labor charge
of $20 to $25 you can have your motor and transmission
completely overhauled. Parts are extra.
All of these prices are approximate, of course, because the
cost of materials needed will depend on the condition of each
car. They show, however, the low cost of putting the Mode!

Of timely interest just now is some
of the information from circular 95
on indirect control measures involv
ing especially spacing, fertilization
and cultivation to promote earliness
of fruiting* in the cotton plant.
Earliness Important.
In the culture of cotton under boll
weevil conditions earliness is of
prime importance, although quality
should not be sacrificed in the pro
duction of an early crop. Fortunate
ly those varieties and cultural prac
tices best adapted to Sctith Carolina
conditions also tend toward earliness.
It is net so much the production of
the f’rst flower as the production of
a large number of flowers early in
the season and their retention and
development to the point where they
will be resistant to boll weevil attack
as quickly as possible. The flowers
that appear during the first three to
four weeks of the fruiting period
largely determine the yield, as a
large percentage of these normally
develop into open bolls. After about
thp third week of flowering there is
a marked reduction in the percent
age of blooms which may be expect
ed to produce open bolls of cotton

olina experiment station during the
past several years indicate that one
flower during the first to third vreek
is worth as much as six or more the
last of the season when shedding is
sd much greater eve n in the absence
of boll weevil activity. This illust
rates clearly the necessity for fol
lowing those practices which will re
sult in the rapid production of flow
ers during the first pait of the sea
son.
The variety determines in a large
measure the rapidity with which
fruit buds, flowers and subsequent
ly bolls will be borne on the in
dividual plant. In addition, the cul
tural and fertility practices deter
mine to a large extent the early*
production of fruit.
Spacing
A perfect stand of cotton is of
great importance in the production
of the crop under any conditions, and
especially so where boll weevils are
present. It is an extremely wasteful
practice to fertilize, cultivate and
poison a field where there is only a
partial stand of cotton. The ideal
number of plants per acre varies ac
cording to different conditions, but
generally speak'ng 15,000 to 20,000
plants should be left on each acre of
and. A spacing of one plant every
eight inches in rows three and one-
lalf feet apart allows for metre than
18,000 plants per- ^cre, provided a
perfect stand is secured.
It has been clearly shifcwn by care-
f ul studies conducted by Olemson col
lege that where the planted© not
have an excessive amount of space
!kr the development of vegetative
parts. Thus is shown the necessity
for leaving the plants relat’veiy thick
in the drill, although they should not
be unduly crowded, as the size of
boll and quality of li.:t may be ad
versely influenced by such practice.
Fertilizers
An abundance of plant food and
moisture are absolutely essential if
the cotton plant is to pioduce a
large amount of fruit. Obv'ously
the farmer has no control over the
amount of rainfall, but he does have
control to a very marked degree over
the amount which may be retained
for the benefit of the growing crop.
The presence cf an abundance of
"rganic matter in the soil will aid
materially in conseiving the soil
mo'sture, and by proper terracing
less water is lost, and mere retained
for the benefit of the growing crop.
Phosphorus: Of the three plant
food elements supplied in a com
plete fertilizer, phosphorus • has the
most marked effect upon the stimu
lation of early season flowers. Where
liberal quantities of available phos
phorus are supplied to the cotton
plant, the produckon of early flowe
is hastened, which, as explair.ee
above, is very necessary.
Nitrogen: Nitrogen is the element
in which most South Carolina soils
are particularly deficient, and there
fore the one wh : ch has greatest ef
fect upon the production of the cot
ton crop. This element when in an
available form is readily lost from
the soil through leaching, therefore
it appears advisable to apply a con
siderable part of the nitrogen, or
ammonia, as a side appl'cation early
i n the life of the plant. If the
growth and fruiting of the cotton
plant are to be stimulated early in
the season, it would appear very
necessary to apply the nitrogenous
plant food in a readily available form
early in the season when vigorous
growth is just commencing. This,
in fact, is the recommended prac
tice, although under certain condi-
tichs the late applications of am
monia is a rcadTy available form
may be advisable.
Potash: Potash docs not have as
great an effect upon the produc
tion of early season flowers as other
phosphorus or nitrogen. It is neces
sary, however, in order to produce a
strong, vigorous plant and it does
appear to prolong the fruiting period.
That is to say, where potassium is
applied in addition to the other ele
ments there is a tendency for the
plants to continue to fruit prolifical-
ly later in the season.
Cultivation
Frequent shallow cultivation of the
crop will aid in its general growth
and development, paiticularly by pre
venting the growth of weeds which
would utilize moisture greatly need
ed by the cotton crop. But very lit-
;le reliance should be placed in cul-
ivation as a direct means of con-
rol, for although somle punctured
squares may be covered with soil
during cultivation this is not a re-
iable control method.
Under normal conditions approxi
mately one-half of the young bolls
shed before reaching the mature
stage. This is exclusive of boll
weevil injury. Therefore, the loss
of a few squares and young bolls as
a result of weevil activity need not
necessarily be considered as alarm
ing. This loss by shedding is es
pecially heavy late in the season anc
occurs most often within a week
after blooming. Natural shedding is
largely caused by a shortage of water
and the consequent inability of the
plant to develop all the bolls borne
on the branches.
The length of time required for
the development and maturation of
the boll is dependent upon a number
of factors, particularly the variety,
climatic conditions and time of sea
son. Approximately 55 days are re
quired fot the bloom to develop
into an ope n boll under normal con
ditions at Clemson college. As stat
ed above this varies greatly with the
variety and season. For instance,
in 1925, a very dry year, the boll
period was about ten days less. The
early season flowers also have the
ability to produce open bolls quicker
than those appearing late in the sea
son. Inasmuch as this is true, it
would appear that the early season
bolls would be developed to the point
where they are resistant to boll
weevil attack in a shorter period
thus again emphasizing the im
portance of early production of fruit
where ootton is grown in the pres
ence of this pest.
Indirect Control Measures.
1. In growing cotton under boll
weevil conditions it is very im
portant to observe all practices
which will result in the production of
flowers early in season, as these

4. An abundance of available plant
food is necessary for the production
of a normal yield. An application
of approx mately 600 to 800 pounds
of complete fertilizer is recommend
ed at planting with an additional
side application of 20 to 30 pounds
of ammonia from readily available
sources shortly after chopping. This
may be supplied by 80 to 120 pounds
of sulphate of ammonia or 110 to
165 pounds of nitrate of soda.
5. Frequent shallow cultivation of
the cottcn crop is recommended.

Again Harold Lloyd has registered
a big success as a comed an and film
producer. His latest Paramount re
leased comedy entitled, “Speedy,”
will be released at the Dixie Theatre
Thursday, Friday and Saturday and
from all accounts, it surpasses any
thing yet attempted by the versatile
film star,— ? f that is possible.
Characteristic of all Lloyd com
edies, and perhaps the biggest fac
tor of the screen comedian’s success
lies in his ability to '“nj^ct good,
whtlesome and novel comical situa
tions *nto his films. With “Speedy,”
Harold has come up to his standard
and many new and hilarious
sequences are features of the picture.
Everythirg is new, and treated in a
typical Lloyd manner.
The bespectacled comedian is said
to be a stickler for authenticity in
his pictures, which leads us to be«
lieve is the reason for the many in
teresting scenes of New York City
incorporated within the film. Trans-
port’ng an entire ccrmpany to New
York for the sake of authentic at
mosphere is ambitious (to say the
least), and helps swing the picture
along in a delightfully smooth man-
nei - .
Ore of the surprises in this latest)
Lloyd effort, is the appearance of
Babe Ruth himself, who figures in
one of the baseball sequences. His
appearance and subsequent perform
ance adds to' the already bright
lustre of the comedy.
The great laugh in store for all
those who see the picture, is the
highly amusing sight of a horse
draw n street car traveling through
the heavily congested streets of New
York with Harold at the helm, or in
this case, the diiver’s reins. The an
tiquated mode of transportation is
the subject around which Harold has
built his bright story.
Ann Christy is Harold Lloyd’s new
leading lady, and an accomplished
actress she is. There is every rea
son to believe she will fulfill all that
is expected of her in the future.
To anyone who could pass up this
new Lloyd comedy, little could be
said, unless it would be “quite in
comprehensible ! ”
