Let us then summon Mr. All-Mash
before the court, present all the ar
guments for and against, and let you
as the jury decide the case according
to the evidence.
The Case Against All-Mash
F rst let us state the case for the
prosecution as summed up by a feed
manufacture who prefers the old
system and can see little good in the
new. We are quoting the following: 1
“A few weeks ago I wrote that the
'all-mas)!* system of poultry feeding
which Has recently been receiving
some publicity was not a new idea
and not the most profitable system.
Several folks have asked me to ex
plain more fully, so here it is.
1. The only advantage in the “all-
mash” System lies in the fact that la
bor ’s reduced through one’s having
only one feed to supply.
2. Offset against this is the 're
duced egg supply which more than
balances any saving.
3. Why does one get less eggs on
the “all-mash system.” Well, the
first Teason is that it is not as flex
ible as where both mash and scratch
feeds arc fed. There are times of
the year, as every experienced pcul-
tryman knows, when layers need
more mash than scratch feed or vice
versa in order to maintain body
weight and production. Where mash
feed alone is fed no variat on can be
made to ~ coihp%nsate • for season,
weather, care, range or other condit
ions that affect the respective
amounts of mash and scratch that a
hen needs.

level and for mountains—how much
more important to adjust your
flock’s feed.
5. Another thing, flocks fed the
“all-mash way” seldom get enough
exercise. There is no scratch feed
to scratch for so the hens aie less
active anch the litter is apt to become
packed and damp which means
trouble always.
• 6. No, sir. Scratch feed and mash
are for such different purposes that
to combine them in a def nite fixed
prcport : on for all year round use is
impossible if you want best results.
7. You don’t eat the same amounts
of the same foods every day in the
year, winter or summer, do you?
Then why ask your hens to do it?
8. Perhaps you ask what about
the tests the “all-mash” ration Were
they all wiong? Yes.
9. In every one of these tests the
“all-mash” ration was fed in com
petition with a fixed 50-50 ration of
scratch and mash the year around.
That’s not the proper way to feed
mash and scratch for the b~st re
sults.”
Such is the case for the prosecu-
t : on and you will perhaps notice that
while it must be presumed the pros
ecutor had some sort of evidence to
support his arguments, nevertheless
such evidence was not introduced in
his testimony.
The Case For All-Mash
Let us now, gentlemen and gentle
women of the jury, present the case
for the defense, and we want you
please to notice that we will intro
duce real evidence in support of our
testimony:
1. All-mash feeding is not such a
new idea but it is a new practice. As
to comparative profits the evidence
available indicates the all-mash
method to be as profitable as the old
method of feeding scratch grain and
mash. So far as real evidence is
concerned there is considerable in
favor of, and but little*, if any,
against all-mash feeding.
2. The saving of labor is but one
of the advantages of all-mash feed
ing. More important is the matter
of sanitation. There is no contradic
tion of the fact that feeding scratch
grain is an unsanitary practice.
3. Another advantage of all-mash
feeding is that it is the easiest and
simplest way of feeding a definite
ration, whereas it is difficult to feed
scratch grain with sufficient care
and skill a- to avoid unbalancing the
ration.
4. The contention that all-mash
feeding reduces egg production is not
supported by facts. Whereas the

On February 21 in a very thriil-

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
CHANGE CLUBS.
On Tuesday, during the assembly
•p^riodr'Mr.--Clemons announced—that
the members of the clubs would
change to other clubs. This is to en
able the students to learn 'something
about all the subjects taught in the^
different clubs.
There was one club, the-Debaters’
Club, that didn’t change its mem
bers. The purpose of this cont’nu
ance of membership is to give the
debaters more practice before the
preliminary contest that is to be held
next Friday in Greenwood.

day by a half holiday.
As the 11th and 8th grades con-

good egg production, if not better,
can be secured from all-mash feeding
as from the same ration fed as
scratch grain and mash. Some of the
facts supporting this contention are
the following:
. 5. Tests conducted on an extensive
scale during the past four years by
the Ohio Experiment'Station indicate
conclusively that about equal egg
productoin can be expected from the
same rat : on fed as all-mash or as
scratch grain and mash, provided
skill and proper management is used
in the feeding of scratch grain. This
involves feeding the scratch grain so
as to avoid unbalancing the ration
and renewal of the litter often so as
to prevent its beconrng too unsan
itary. •
6. A test by the Poultry Depart
ment, University of IlPnois, report
ed in th'' December issue of Poultry
Tribune was as follows: “The exper
iment involved three flocks of Rhode
Island Reds and three flocks of
White Leghorns. These were put on
the same ration for forty-four weeks.
One flock of each breed was given
scratch grain in litter, one flock in
troughs and one flock was getting no
scratch grain at all. The results
showed there was no difference in
production due to the method of
feeding.”
7. In the November Experiment
Station Record, Page 662, the follow
ing quotation is taken: “Is Scratch
Grain Necessary ? Two lots of pull
ets were fed the standard Purdue
laying ration. In lot 1 the scratch
grain was scattered in the litter and
in lot 2 it was ground and mixed with
the mash and fed in hoppers. Both
lots received small amounts 'of
sprouted oats daily. The pullets av
eraged 120 and 146 eggs for nine
months in the respective lots.” (i. e.,
26 eggs per hen more on All-mash).
8. The highest egg record made by
any hen in the U. S. was 344 eggs
laid by a hen in one of the flocks of
the Washington Experiment Station
at Pullman, Washington. This hen
was one of a flock which received
all-mash and no scratch grain.
.9. The Ohio Station has been re
ceiving letters from poultry keepers
located in all parts of the country
reporting their success with all-mash
for egg production.

grain group had 276 eggs per bird
to their credit and the allmash group

11. The qeust'on of adjusUng the
ration to meet seasonal requirements
is a plausible sounding theory, but
the trouble is to find some one who
really knows how it should be done.
Of course it is easy to think that this
or that should be done, but when it
comes to testing out such theories
they don’t seem to work out accord
ing to expectations. In other words
a lot of such theories, beliefs and ar
guments are not based on facts.
12. Actual experimental ev : dence
fails to substantiate the popular ex
ercise theory, the idea of changing
the ration to suit t he season of the
year, the “carburator theory,” or the
comparison to human beings.
You have* read the evidence,
Agairst All-Mash, and For All-
Mash. What is your own opinion ?

poultrymen.

CLEMSON COLLEGE, Feb. 28.—
“The Agronomy Division of the
South Carolina Experiment Station
has found through long-time experi
ments on various soil types of the
State that these types require the ad
dition of certain amounts cf phos
phorus, nitrogen, and potash if they
are to produce cotton efficiently,”
writes R. W. Hamilton in the new
Extension Bulletin 86, “Cotton Fer
tilizers,” which is just eff the press.
Phosphorus, which hastens the
ripening and opening of cotton
should be applied under the crop in
abundance. On the “light” soils of
the Coastal Plains, no less than 48
pounds an acre should be used. In
the Piedmont at least 54 pounds an
acre of phosphoric acid should be
supplied. Eighty pounds an acre
should be the limit for this fertilizer,
points out the soil feitil'ty special
ist.
After the absolute food necessities
of cotton have been met the further
addition of nitrogen has a greater
benefit than any ether element,
says Mr. Hamilton. Since all South
Carolina soils are low in nitrogen a
minimum of 18 pounds and not more
than 40 pounds of ammonia per acre
should be used under all cotton in

two weeks after chopping, cotton
should be side-dressed with at least
18 pounds of inorganic ammonia. If
the stand will average plants every
eight inches in three-foot rows, if
grass and weevils are under control
and moisture conditions are favor
able an additional side-dressing at
blooming stage with 18 pounds of
ammonia may pay, says Mr. Hamil
ton.
Lighter Coastal Plains soils should
have at least 18 pounds of potash an
acre. Heavier clays of the Piedmont
will need at least 12 pounds an acre.

lications at Clemson College, also
contains bales that will be useful to
anyone home-mixing his complete
fertilizers and will readily show any
one how much of any particular fer
tilizer will satisfy his need^.

SCHOOL GROUNDS.
The agriculture class organized it
self into a club for the purpose of
improving the school grounds. The
club will co-operate with the -school
tiustees and Parent-Teachers Asso
ciation in any plans made.
The first meeting was held on
Tuesday and the officers were elect
ed, as follows: Luther Drennan,
i prcs ; dent, William Robinson, vice-
president and treasurer; Thomas
Dowtin, secretary. An executive com
mittee was elected that is composed
of tlm three officer^ Mr. Mason,
Willie.-.n Moss. The executive com
mittee wdl discuss plans and bring
them before the club.
The boys will do most of the work
during extra curricula period- and
if necessary, the agriculture per’od
may b', used sometimes. As the boys
wish to do something for the school,
they plan to do as much of the work
as they .can. /
This is a big undertaking, but we
believe that with the Help of Mr.
Mason, that a lively class of boys
can put it across.

SINGING PERIOD..
In order that the student body may
have practice in singing, a large
r.umb?r of new song books have beer,
bought and an assembly period of
fifteen minutes every day has been
arranged which will be devoted to
singing.
The enthe student body seems to
be taking great interest and it is
hoped that this will continue through
the school year. I

ITEMS OF INTEREST.
The old McCormick Public Library
donated to the High School Library
a set of thirteen volumes of “Stod
dard’s Lecturers.” These books are
very interesting as well as useful and
the school students are very proud of
them. They are valuable because
they are out of print now. Some
have read several volumes through,
and some have begun to read and to
study the pictures in them.
The Senior Class met on Tuesday,
February 21, and elected their class
musician, Elliott Seigler. This of
ficer was overlooked when the other
officers were elected.

It often pays to make an investi
gation of the markets before selling
timber from a farm woodland, says
the Forest Service of the Un'ted
States Department of Agriculture.
As an illustration of this a Foiest
Service officer relates a recent ex
perience in the South. “In one in
stance,” he says, “while riding along
a road with a truck driver, it was
learned that the man’s father-in-law
had approximately 10,000 feet of
cedar lumber for sale. The owner was
offered only $25 per thousand for
this material, by a local buyer. In
