. 4*e~ THE MESSENGER IS11ED EVERTc THURSDAY JOU^TT P. SMITH, Editor. i cu&D at the Post Office at MoCormic'k • S9 second-class mail matter. McCormick, S. £., &ept. 29. DEMOCRATIC TICKET. consistent mtunber of the Metho dist Church. 11 Hia relatives and ; many of his personal friends weiit from this side of the Savannah to ; attend the fiinetal.'' 1 ■ i For President: ALTON B. PARKER, Of New Yorjc. " For Vice-President, HENRY G DAVIS, Qf West Virginia. To 6ui Farming Friends. While we are ready to admit that ten cents for cotton is a fair living price to the farmer, we be lieve that every bale sold now at that price’ ineans a clear loss to the tiller of the soil of from ton to tWe.ive dollars per bale. Mr. Morse and other welj posted men of New York, and Mr. Peters, ‘president of the Texas Cotton Growers AssociatioiV, assert most positively that the spinners of "'‘■"England and the Continent have contracted for the sale of their output at the rate of twelve cents per pound for cotton on the farm, Jf this be true, why higgle around the ten‘cent mark? Why not feell just enough to meet your pressing debts and hold the remainder of tlj# crop for 12 to 15 cents. Tha+ price will come, a9 a 10,000,000 bale crop means a cotton famine. ’ We know , full well that we are in the minority in this estimate of the crop of 1904-’5, but we firmly believe that le3s than ten and a quarter million bples will be packed. There are stacks of good men who are guessing eleven to twelve million bales, but those broad guesses don’t amouhto to a row of brass pins, There i9 abso lutely no foundation’to base their estimate on. The boll weevil, t)ie black rot, of wbatoVei? 'you' are pleased to call this cotton blight, will cause this to be a short crop". Aside from the blight, the dry Weather has cut off a|| prospects a late top crop. Race Riot. Last Tuesday, 2fith instant, a ~~ ‘- 1 ' eci#7re4-4»'^Jar nc h hu r#, ing in two negroes be ing Yill’ed outright and three far tally wounded.' The shooting oc curred on the plantation of J. J. Johnson, fifteen miles below Mem phis. Johnson and hig friends are jjearchfug for other members of 'the negro gang,' and if they are found more" trouble jnny be ex-r peeted. , \ The Newberry Observer comes to us twice a week, and we are al ways glad to see if It is bright, clean and newsy. If its visits were daily we would be better pleased, . ' . Death of Mr. W. B. Murray. •' V . S - • ’ V , Last Saturday morning the tel ephone line between Lincolnton, Ga.,aVid McCormick surprised and shecktHpttrp relatives and friends *>f l^lr. AVUIiaifi B. Murray.* Only about two weeks ago Mr. Murray returned from the Hot Springs, Ark., where he spent some; time trying to regain his wonted health, and was supposed* to be somewhat improved of liis Theumatic troub les; but it appears that the health Jjbed. was -only of a temporary natureN-Mx ^Murray; retired Fri day night in his usualgood spirits, but when called Saturday morning for breakfast, bis- ‘brother-in-law, Mr. W. S. Boyd, faitefitd ayouse ‘him. The room door beeing locked, fir. Boyd entered through a win* pw and found Mr: Murray dead, jt still warm, showing that death entered but a little while be- khand. ' ,' Ir. Murray was a large man, of athletic proportions, tfud no friend or relative supposed that he was bo near death’s door. Previous to departure for Hot Springs he traveled for Messrs. Durst, An drews^ Co., of Greenwood, S. C., 4ad’hfr£a M popular and successful salesman. He numbered his friends klbng the C. & W. C. Railway by the hundreds, was honorable and upright, and was highly esteemed by all he came in contact ‘ with, either in business pr pleasure. Many yeai’S ago he married Miss Gussie Blanchard, of Lincolnton, who died about three years ago. Two children were born of this union, but bot\i preceded father and mother to ^est eternal. The brothers and sitters of the de ceased are Messrs\ T- E. Murray, 6f Elberton, F,\P, Murray, of Konie; and James Murray, of At lanta, Mrs. J. P.'Jennings and Miss Mamie Murray, of McCor mick, and Mrs. VV. S. Boyd, of Lincoluton. • The remains were buried last Sunday in Lincoltou Cemetery by the Masonic order, of '/tobibb Mr. Murray was an honor- member. Mr. Murray was a M. -• -..A. , i Letter from a Free Thinker. Calhoun (Bounty, \ . * v ' *• Sept. 26, 1904. j Mr. Editor: In reading Madge’s letter of recent date in your ex cellent paper, I was started to _ thinking, and when I began think- also instructor iu telegraphy ing I looked up the vote of our; vv,w laBt primary in Abbeville County; and when I thought over it well, I was tempted to begin cussing. A “ring”! Why absurd. Old Abbeville being controlled by a “ring”! Why the last election proves it. ■•The' Probate Judge, Clerk of -Court, Treasurer, Audit or, Superintendent of Education, Sheriff, Senator and one Repre- Wlllington Dots. WlI.LfNGTON, S. C., I Sept . 27, 1901. i Mr. Edward Andrews; who has taught a good school in North Carolina during the vacation sea son, was in town Saturday on‘his way back to college; Ouf boys and girls are again off for college. Calhoun Link goes back to Fork Union academy, Vir* giiiia, where he is a student and Ofr viHe Calhoun' re-enters Wofford; Edward Andrews, South Carolina college ; Arch Britt and Cliff Britt', Clemson; Arch Talbert, Furman University; Misses Mary and El- ovse Britt, Limestone; Miss Brice Morris, Agnes Scott Institute, and Misses Alice find Lou Talbert, Greenville Femalfe College. Miss Sarah Elizabeth Britt has been spending the * summer in New Goods! New Styles! LOW PRICES. I HAVE just returned from ' and .Cheapest Line of New York with the Largest. "Prettiest buy the Still, a I sentative, all from the “city” of J Florida. Miss Britt will teach in Abbeville. Two Representatives, Supervisor and Coroner from the county. The city cast 650 votes, and the county about 1,400 votes; still the country people are to sub mit to the result, and like true democrats that they are will sub mit; but two years from now may be there will a reckoning. Also “they say” the city of Ab beville loves this section and is opposed to the county,—that they do not want us to leave, but to stay in old Abbeville. Let’s see again. This section only offers two candidates from this territory of about 150 square miles, or one- fourth of Abbeville'County, and what vote did the city give them to encoitrage their staying in old Abbeville?'’ To 'The candidate for coroner the city gave two votetf— a large inducement, indeed. To the candidate for the House of Representatives the* city gave 84 votes,—a fine illustration of her love to this section. Our candidate 'for the house re ceived next to the largest vote in the county, excluding the city vote. Hence we conclude that af ter all there is a “ring” at'the court-house which intends to con trol the politics, offices and officers uf Abbeville County ; and as for this section being- recognized;— well, the vote in the primary tells the tale. Anyway, Mr. Editor, we are not left out altogether, as two of our recently elected ifepresen-. ,,, ^ , tatives are not enemies of the new i ^ ,1C * 1 ^ 8t * Thursday. covthtV.
