Conference Personals.
Rev. E. P. Taylor, one of the
iew Presiding Elders appointed
ast night, is an example of what a
nan may accomplish in this coun
ry and in this age. With the
reatest difficulty he secured the
raining from the preparatory de
artment of Wofford, working his
Aay through. By the use of the
trictest economy-his expenditures
or board for one month were only
I.75-he worked his way through
;his department. He entered Wof
ord College in 1882 "with a wife
mnd only ten dollars in his purse".
ie and his wife were boarded by a
)rother-in-law during the first year.
['he next year he taught school and
nade enough to pay his back in
lebtedness for board a.nd to carry
irn in co'lege for another year.
[he same course was pursued
brough his sophomore and junior
rears. He entered the senior class,
n his own words, "penniless but
with a strong deter,nination." He
nade his way by chopping wood,
:arning by this means some times
is much as six dollars per week,
md. having a mechanical turn, by
naking picket fences and such
)ther things as he could sell. He
ays that he "bad the good fortune
:o make fifty cents one evening by
:king the place of a washer
woman and doing some washing
~or a good lady."
He was given the janitorship of
the college, and for this work re
eived $7.oo per month. In De
:ember of his senior year he was
nade,pastor of Bethel church, the
:ity mission. His w<ork was ex.
tremely heavy, but he successfully
passed his examination and received
is diploma, his little daughter Car
rying him a handsome bouquet on
is graduation day.
He is a faithful and thoughtful
preachei-, and his ministry has been
:rowned with a well deserved suc
eess.
