Our esteemed friend, T. J. W., does
not favor compulsory education for
South Carolina. We appreciate very
much his kind words about the editor
and we hope the editor will not disap
point him. It is necessary, however,
to correct one or two wrong impressions
which seem to have been made on the
mind of T. J. W. and possibly others.
In advocating compulsory education no
one suggested that there would be any
increase of the amount of school tax or
th ., it would be advisable to lengthen
the school term to nine months, though
that would be desirable, but not prac
ticable at present and for some time to
come. The most ardent advocates of
compulsory education for South Caroli
na only contend for a term of sixteen
weeks, which is less than the public
school term in this Stato.
As to the statement that "there are at
least three-fifths of the white parents
doing everything available to school
their children, in fact there are hun
dreds of them making sacrifice."
This is true, and no better argument
in favor of a compulsory education law
can be made. "Three-fifths of the
white parents are doing everything
available to school their children." Com
pulsory education would not in the
least affect these three-fifths. But
there are two-fifths of the white
parents of the State who are not ac
counted for by T. J. W., and thest
two-fifths, and not the "three-fifths who
are doing everything available" al.
ready, are the ones we desire to reach
and are the only ones who would be
reached by legislation of this charac
ter.
Referring to the case nent ioned ih
these columns of a young girl in one o:
our upper counties who could neithei
read nor write and had nevtr heard 01
the existence of a God, T.J. W. as
serts that "any parents who neglet-l
the moral training of-their children in
this respect are not worthy to live. -
If this be true. what about a Statt
which permits parents so to neglect
their children'' But the worth of the
parents is not the question. The wel
fare ef the child!-n is that which is
demanding atter:ion.
As to the cotttn mi:l. what T. d. W.
says ec Mlr. M-Crary is possibly true.
The mill has bailt a handsome school
building and contributes to the support
of the school, and yet there are chil
dren right here in the Newberry cot
ton mill village who ought to be at
school and whose parents want to send
them but who cannot because their
labor is demanded in the mill.
There is no danger that we will overdo
the mater of education for a long time to
come. If it is right to tax the peoplh
for the education of the children te
cause in a government like ours at
educated and intelligent citizenship is
not only desirable but necessary, thei
it is right to say to those parents o
guardians who ar-e neglecting the chil
dren entrusted to their care, that yo1
shall giv'e them thle adlvantage of t h
education prov'ided. Not to increas
the amount expended but that all th
children shall receive the advantage o
that already p)rov'ided.
The town of Greenwood is making,
hard fight to secure thle Methodist ('ol
lege in case it is remioved fromi Columi
bia and the opinion prIev'ails' that iti
to be moved. The board favors miov
ing and a great many Methodists. Th'i
feeling, it seems to us, pr-evails fi-on
the fact that the 1)eop)1 of Columibil
are utterly indifferent. Columbia i
centrally located and is really the placi
for the college, but as the busines
men there are so indiffer-ent it look:
that the college will be moved.
We admire the p)luc(k of Greenwood
The college will be worth a great den
to any community in which it is locatet
from every point oif '1iew -financial
intellectural and moral.
We like a town or a community tha
is progressive and( a pleopile who cat
see beyond their nose.

ral Assembly of the State of South Caro
lina: That the following amendment to

tion, be agreed to: add to the end thereof
the following words: that this section
shall not apply to the following townships
in the following Counties: Dunklin and
Oaklawn in the County of Greenville; the
townships of Cokesbury, Ninety-Six and
Cooper mn the County of Greenwood, Sul.
