Col. George Johnstone, of Newberry,
and Col. William Elliott, of Beaufort,
two of the candidates for the United
States Senate to succeed the Hon. John
L. McLaurin, came to town yesterday
and registered at the Argyle Hotel. A
reporter for The News and Courier
found them both in Room 22. They
were contented and, as Col. Johnstone
observed, "quite calm."
"We were just discussing transcen
dentalism," said Col. Johnstone quizzi
cally; "what, I ask you, is more inter
esting, pellucid and fraught with signifi
cance than that system of philosophic
inquiry which is identified with the
name of Kant?"
"None, brutus, none," replied the
reporter, timidly.
"Then none have I offended," said
Col. Johnstone in a satisfied tone.
Thereupon the distinguished citizen
from Newberry proceeded to discuss
men and things in sentences that
teemed with epigrams and, occasionally,
with the sort of incisive sarcasm that
fascinates the victim and then scalps
him.
"I am sorry this campaign is over,"
said Col. Johnstone, "I would that there
were six more months of it. I have
enjoyed it and gained flesh. It has
been a frolic; peace and brotherly love
have reigned."
"What of the future?" was the next
-interrogation.
"The future," he replied, solemnly,
"is in the hands of The News and
Courier. But perhaps," he added quick
ly, "you can tell me something of the
political situation here."
"It is badly mixed, Colonel."
"In what respect?"
"In every respect."
"Along what lines?"
"Along all lines."
"Wherefore?" he persisted.
"In what respect do you mean,
Colonel?" r plied the Reporter, rather
helplessly.
"Pardon me," he said, all urbanity
again, "I was only inquisitive-and
vacuous.".
"Would you or Col Elliott care to sy
anything about your candidacy?"
"What shall we do?" he replied,
turning to Col Elliott. "Our opponents
have given interviews to the press per
meated with that hopeless hopefullness
which excites emotion too deep for
tears. Now it is our turn; what shall
we say?"
Col. Elliott replied that he would sub
scribe to any statement with reference
to their respective candidacies which
Col. Johnstone might make.
"All right," said Col. Johnstone, turn
ing to the Reporter, "just take this as
I dictate it: 'A newspaper sought an
interview with. Col Elliott and Mr.

worn by the recent canvass and both
absolutely calm and confident Neither
was willing to beboastful for fear of
bringing himself in contrast with those
-who have given out recent interviews
to The News and Courier.' Have you

It may not be improper to presume
that the visit of Col Johnstone and
CoL Elliott to Charleston is not wholly
devoid of political sigelance, but of
that neither gentleman would vouch
safe a whisper nor a hint. -News and
