Sent to the Gang. -Magistrate Chappell sent to the chain gang for 30 days on the 16th, Jirr Smith, charged with injuring property by throwing a rock through window glass of a house belonging to Mr. Huff. The same day he sent Ed Boyd to the gang for 30 days for violating contract, and on the 18th he sent John Kelly tc the gang for 30 days for petit larceny, also Gus Guyhon for 30 days for violat ing contract, also Will Moore for 3( days for petit larceny. Yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock th4 xcursion from Newberry reached th< ity. There were six coaches well fillec irith negroes and one coach comforta ly filled with whites. The excursion ts were very much in evidence aftei heir arrival until the witching, waninl our last night. The street car was the most fetching ascination for the negroes. Those wh< rere not literally carried away, wouk tand on the street corners and gaze ir nute astonishment at the trolley. The stupid plea that the poison is not enough Sin any one article to hurt the consumer indicates that the venders never give s enough thought to any aspect of the q uestion but the pursuit of the nimble dime and nickel to learn the effect of the cumulative poisoning. Certainly when we hear from the trade itself that the practice of mixing poison in food has attained a 20 per cent prevalence, it is time for strenuous suppression, aimed with the most vigor at tne manu facturers of such articles."
