tI. :' v'7. The meeting on Tuesday passed off very pleasantly. Good order prevailed but that was no more than we expected. Chairman Goggans made a good presid ing officer, fair and courteous to all of the candidates and the meeting moved right along and was gotten through with in less time than any yet held. The crowd was undemonstrative which was evidence that no candidate was a special favorite of any large proportion of the audience. It was a day on which votes could be made if any of them happened to make a hit by his speech or by his movements among the people. Our people are now in a frame of mind to select the men for the various offices who in their judgment are the best equipped in ability and character to dis charge the duties of the offit- to which they aspire. The crowd was represen tative from all sections of the county. One of the physicians of the town suggested to us the other day that the city council should have the road ma chine run over the streets where the excavations have been made and filled and then have the streets sprinkled with oil. We pass the suggestion on to council with our approval and endorse ment. This will put the streets in good order and keep down the dust and will act as a preventive to disease. It may be the means of preventing a great deal of sickness and some deaths. It will cost a little money to be sure, but this is not to be put up against the health and life of the people. We hope the mayor and aldermen will take up the suggestion and act upon it at once. Mr. H. H. Evans in his encounter with the editor of the Greenville News took the only course that was open to him. Some editors seem to construe the liberty of the press into a license to say any sort of defamatory things about individuals, and these need to be taught a lesson that the columns of a newspaper is not the place to pour out their wrath and personal billings gate. The statement that Mr. Evans struck from behind we cannot credit, for it is not reasonable that two men would be standing up talking and one have his back turned to the other, and then a K man would hardly go that far to strike a man in the back or fi'om behind and unawares. The occasion which gave rise to this occurrence is very unfortu nate, and such publications cause peo ple to lose confidence in the 1press and the influ~ence of the press is weakened. Mr. Stevenson in his speech on cam paign day asked a question which was an insinuation that the governor had instructed the constabulary to work for his competitor, Col. Gunter. Inmmedi ately after Mr. Stevenson left the plat form we told him he was entirely mis -> taken and we could deny most positively without consulting the governor that instructions had been given the con stabulary or any one else by the gov ernor to work for any particular candi date. The constables should have the right to vote as they please and so long as it does not interfere with . their du ties they should be given the privilege -to speak a word to their friends in be half of any candidate they might pre fer. We have no doubt the constable who gave Mr. Stevenson the informa tion which he claims to have is working for him. That is all right so long as they do not let it interfere with their duties. We see the governor has de nied the statement. We knew he would for it was without foundation in fact. In the race two years ago the governor -would not permit a constable to discuss politics with him and no instructions| were given them to work for him. On *the contrary they were instructed to attend to their duties and let politics alone. The same charge was made two years ago that Gov. McSweeney had .the constables working for him. Mr. Stevenson should remember the fate of the man who tried to make capital out of this sort of thing in the' campaign two years ago. Mr. Steven son could very easily have found out by telegram if it were true that the con stables had instructions to work for Mr. Gunter, and we are sure the an swer would have been prompt and with out equivocation. But he didn't elect to do that. He sought to make capital out of it and by doing so, to hold the governor up as a narrow partisan. We did not think Mr. Stevenson would doI that.
